How to get 2d geometry (ie, DXF) of STL file

I have an stl file that is essentially 1/2" thick flat panel with some geometry on it (some triangles).  I want to project the geometry onto a new sketch, or some other method, to get the geometry into DXF or a new sketch I can extrude from which I can create the DXF.  I don't seem to be able to do this.  Is there a way?

Thanks,

-Tom

Nevermind. I am going to get the native format and generate a different output so I don't have to deal with STL.

You could check out this add-in which can project mesh data into a sketch:

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
