How to create a new component from existing?

Here's my problem: I created an assembly with some angle iron frames, using the same angles as a component a few places since it was the same length. As I got further into the design I wanted to add some holes to only one of those angle.

Problem is anything I do to the one component is done to the other, which messes up my drawings. components.jpg

I attempted to copy and "paste new" on one of the components to create a new unique instance but that seemed to cause issues in my drawing, as did trying to delete one of the components (likely due to how I extruded the object and placed joints).

Is there any way to create a new component from an existing so I can only modify one of these angle irons with new holes? Anything I've tried seems to break the model, so far my best plan is to mark up the drawing in AutoCAD with the appropriate holes so I can send it out for fabrication.

Copy the component, then use Paste New - this will create a totally independent new component from the original.  You can modify the copy without affecting the original

Paste new doesn't seem to be a workable solution here.

As I wrote above I did try "paste new" - the problem is if I try and delete one of the occurrences of the component I break my model and would have to go back and correct a lot of issues that is created by this.

sorry, but that is the only mechanism that exists in Fusion today.  All instances of the same component share the same geometry, so a change to one changes all instances.  Paste New is the only way to have "copies" (unassociative) that have different geometry.

If your issue isn't with the Paste New operation, but rather with the Deleting of the angle you don't want anymore...

You can Remove it instead, which won't cause all the problems.

Thank you @chrisplyler , remove was exactly what I needed to keep the model intact when using paste new.

I hadn't used that feature or understood its purpose.

It's a timeline entry. In other words, it lets the item exist along the timeline in the past where you need it so that later items that depend on it don't get messed up.
