How to Create a Grid at 45 Degrees to Sketch Plane

Having modeled a simple box as in the screenshot, what is the easiest way to cut a grid out of the bottom of it, on a diagonal? For example, cutting a pattern of 18mm squares spaced 20mm on center to leave behind that 2mm grid structure?

This is easy to do with a rectangular pattern of squares as long as it is aligned with the x and y axis. But the only way I have found to do this so far, is to rotate the box 45 degrees , cut the grid, and then rotate the box back.

Is there a less kludgy way?

Hi,

I would have to say after playing with it for a while, your kludgy way works so stick with it. I tried to do a similar

thing except with sketches but I ended up using a rectangular pattern and rotating it also as you do not seem to be

able to rotate a rectangular pattern. With some complex mathematical calculations it is theoretically possible to do

what you want with a circular pattern but why would you when a quick rotate and back works. This is one of the

very few occasions that you "might" use the Move command.

I could see a very useful function if I was able to rotate a rectangular pattern before placing it in the design space

for exactly the same sort of reason you are asking about. Maybe @jeff_strater might want to have a look at it as a

function update?

Cheers

@jhawkinsRXEMB

Assuming the box is square Construct>Axis Through Two Points - the points being opposite corners of the box and use this as the Axis for the Pattern Feature.  Might be a bit less kludgy.

If not square draw a point the distance of the short side to use as the second point for the the Construction Axis

Hi,

Good solution. I have just been playing with Planes on another forum question and creating an axis is just below

the plane tools. Doh!

I still think that the ability to rotate a rectangular pattern before placement would be a good tool to have available.

Cheers

Done!

Rectangular pattern on angle, select angle of the hole side/s.  KISS

Pattern of cut holes will leave the grid

Might help.....

Exactly what I was after. It appears to work for drawings as well as objects/features. Thanks.
