How to constraint text?

This is in many regards a duplicate, but I'm not satisfied with the "solutions". I need the letters A to P on the faces of some gear teeth. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried copying a sketch of a perfectly centered A to another face but i lost the constraints once I changed the text to B. I've read some threads about this but they always have complicated solutions that involve finding secret magic numbers.

etfrench and  James Youmatz were very helpful in these threads:

...but surely, there must be a better way, right? Something as simple as aligning and editing text is becoming a real pain.

Thank you for helping beginners like me. Btw, where did your original reply go? I can't find it.
