I highlight 3 sketches , RMC  , then select create group and nothing happens

in the timeline creating a group works and can name etc

but not in sketches?

Suspect another newbie issue.

thanks

Mark

your understanding is correct - you cannot group sketches.  Groups today are limited to bodies.

why does the software offer that choice if it doesn't work?

that's a bug, certainly.  Agree, it should not offer that context menu for sketches.

I do not see this behavior, can you record a screencast illustrating it?

or are you referring to "Create Group" in the timeline?  That option exists as well, and does create a timeline group:

.... the make group command should be grayed out or not show up at all if it does not work.

Makes learning difficult and raises frustration level.

It is very disheartening not to be able to trust the software to function.

which brings me to copying complete sketches  ...

that doesn't seem to work as a highlight and drag

the 9 step process (on forum  autodesk 07-10-2014)   seems to work erratically at best

projecting is cumbersome also

copying complete sketches is not supported.  I'm not sure what your comment about highlight and drag.  The process for copying sketch geometry to a new sketch is:

  1. select the geometry in the source sketch
  2. Copy
  3. create a new sketch
  4. Paste

The reason why direct copy/paste of entire sketches is not yet supported has to do mainly with the complexities of the sketch coordinate system, and projected geometry.
