Hi Phil,
I understand the way it works, but it is (IMHO!!!)...
a) not perfectly implemented, because there is hidden behavior (snapping without visual reference),
b) parametric modelling is IMHO far away of being production ready yet, and
c) it is not my kind of favorite workflow.
To a): It may be helpful if there would be an option to automatically turn on visualization of the underlying construction plane as soon as you drag elements of a sketch in layout mode. A grid could be rendered on this plane, visualizing the snapping actions more clearly.
To b): See for example http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-ideastation-request-a/parameters-dialog-not-blocking/idi-p/...
On the one hand you say you want to see changes directly reflecting the entire design, on the other hand it is hard to do so using the current parametric approach (if you like to work with parameters during the whole process) IMHO.
To c): I like to design my models as precise as possible right from the start but I'm not a fan of tools like SCAD where you have to "program" your design (as Computer Scientist I come to the conclusion that end-users should never ever be forced to go through the struggle of bending a computer system programmatically). My designs are born inside my mind and often I have them mentally in a nearly production ready state. So I need Fusion 360 mainly to transfer the design from my head into a more "physical" state. I am also able to imagine on-the-fly ideas very good "virtually" so I don't need to push things around in Fusion 360 in a rule of thumb manner. Therefor I like to work with sketches and build a precise model visually with all the snapping and constraining. Binding aspects to parametric values is a bonus for me that allows my to e.g. building variants of products more quickly by changing a few numbers, but it is not as I would like it to be yet (see point b).
Just my two cents! 🙂
