Get the Rust Out, I Mean In

How do I made a metal body appear as if it is rusted?  How to I paint on a mixture of grey, yellows, and oranges onto the surface of a body or component?  I have attached two photos to give you an idea of the appearance I want.

Rust Example 2.jpgRust Example 1.jpg

I can compose the metal plates and rivets.  However the appearance is a solid grey.  Again, I would like to get a mixture of greys, yellows, and oranges.

I have been using Fusion 360 for less than 60 days and sure could use your help.

Thanks you.

Jason;

You have provided a great answer.  This solution works good for solid colors.  However, with a color pattern like rust, the appearance is impacted by image tiling.

The X and Y image aspect has to be values larger than the object you are modeling.  For example, if the object you are modeling is no more than 8 inches long or wide, then the X and Y image aspect has to be set to a larger number like 10 inches for X and 10 inches for Y.  If the X and Y aspect values are lower than the object's length or width, then tiling of the image occurs across your object.  When the image is tiled across the length of the object being modeled, the appearance looks awful.

Unfortunately, I am modeling a 40 foot long by 12 inches tall, rusted steel beam.  I have attached a screen shop of the beam.  The left side is before I apply an appearance.  The right side is the beam with a rust appearance.  Notice the impact of tiling.  The X and Y aspect values were set to 120 inches by 120 inches.

Jason, your assistance was great.  I now need a way to smooth out or blur over the tile edges.

Thanks for your help.

Your search word on Google should simply include “seamless texture” or ”tileable texture” you can find such things at textures.com.

Oh, am I one happy camper!!!

Your suggestion about using seamless images and www.textures.com worked great.

Jason's suggestion about how to create your own appearances, importing an image, and playing with the X and Y aspect dimensions was also excellent.

I now can do rusted steel beams.  See the attached rendering showing before and after appearances.

Both of you have taught me a lot more.  I now can do brick walls, paved roads, patios, and many, many, more items that require textures way beyond the standard appearance provided by Fusion 360.

Thank you both so much.

I hope this whole dialog and exchange of knowledge makes it into the Fusion 360 training materials.
