Fusion configuration 'hack'

Hi, while watching the getting started videos on Fusion, particularly the version controls, I had a thought about whether this could be used to approximate Fusion's lack of configurations (please please please add this feature!!!!).

My thought was to add different configurations saved as versions, with the idea that I could then select between the versions.

All seemed good initially, but when I inserted the second component I found that you can't have multiple versions in the same assy. Both inserted components change to the same version, whichever has been selected last.  So this is a limitation of this approach. However a further workaround is then to break the link after insertion, after which you can then insert a different version. If you only need one part inserted then its not a limitation (except you can't click on the update warning triangle as it moves the version back to latest again, so probably need to break the link in this case too).

I know this is a very clunky method, and has limitations in terms of not being able to edit features earlier in the timeline... and having to rename the parts after breaking the links (to make clear which config it is) but this method may prove useful to someone to save having loads of files saved in their parts library for the different versions of an essentially static component design.

Oh, and just to repeat myself, PLEASE ADD CONFIGURATIONS to Fusion!  If you have ever used them in other software it feels prehistoric to not have them. Being able to have a single part represent say all Igus plain bush sizes possible is such a massive efficiency saving. Your design can even link in context to them to adjust machined components to the size of the selected bushes. It really is essential, and as a newbie user if I can come up with the clunky method above, it really can't be that difficult for the developers to add this feature properly.

EDIT... It is possible to get access to earlier design history using the version promotions if you needed to do that. But again, a bit clunky, and messes with the later versioning.

Pete.

We've asked for this many, many times and I believe this is in the works. No firm roadmap or timeline is available quite yet ...

Yes, we really need configurations, especially for standard hardware. It seems like the groundwork for this exists in the parameters table. "Just" need to be able to add more columns, right? 😉

It'd be fantastic to be able to import Solidworks files with configurations in them, like the attached file containing all of the metric SO series PEM standoffs. That way you can assemble it once, and then just change the configuration if you need a different height or different thread size.
