Fusion 360 Not Exporting as STEP (stp),

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

I have deleted all other components and bodies and Fusion 360 still gives me an error when exporting my part to STP.  Is there something I need to do specifically to make Fusion 360 happier?

Error Info:

"Translator failed to export the asset as file: file"

and

"1 error(s)

boost::filesystem::copy_file: Operation not permitted:"

Thanks,

Shannon

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry to hear that! Off of the top of my head, I am unsure what could be causing that. Do you mind sharing the public link to the file with me? This way, I can try to reproduce the issue on my end and see what is causing it.

Thanks,

Hi @Anonymous,

Very strange! I was able to export the file as a .stp file from the File->Export menu no problem. Attached is my step file. I have two theories about this - the first is that you have a bunch of mesh bodies in your model. Those mesh bodies will not carry over to the .stp file, only the geometry. By default however (and this is the behavior that Fusion showed on my machine), it should still export correctly and just ignore the mesh bodies. My other theory is that somehow the file is in use/Fusion is being tricked. I am curious if clearing your local user cache would solve the error. Just note however, by clearing that cache, you lose all your offline data that isn't backed up. Is this the only file this error is happening with? What if you make some changes, save to a new version, and then try to export? Does it work then?

Thanks,

Hi @James.Youmatz,

When I open the link I created, I can download the file as STP and have it sent to my inbox, but Mac sees it as a txt file.  The link is called:

metalKey_SClouston_STEP.stp.txt

I just delete the .txt part and it's good to go, right?

Thanks,

Shannon

PS, I haven't tried the workarounds you provided - just been busy.  I'll get back to you.  Thanks for helping me out!

Hi @Anonymous,

Not a problem glad I can help out! As far as the step file goes, on my computer it saves as a .step file when I click the download link. Not sure why it would add the .text extension on a Mac. Should be good to go if you delete it, but I can test as well if it turns out it doesn't work.

Thanks for the update!

Hi @Anonymous,

Just downloaded your .txt file, and renamed it by removing the .txt extension so it ended in .stp. I then uploaded it to Fusion and everything seemed to work just fine and the body loads in correctly!

@James.Youmatz

That's good to hear. Okay, well if I run into the same problem again, I'll let you know, but at least I have a workaround.

Cheers,

Shannon

Hi @James.Youmatz,

I'm experiencing that Translater issue again.  I am trying to export my files to STEP and Fusion is not able to do it.  You said that I should try clearing my cache - how do I do that?

Also, there are components in the scene that are OBJ files - and since you mentioned that the OBJ files won't export correctly (I don't need them anymore anyway) - so, can I just delete these?

Thanks,

Shannon

Hi @Anonymous,

You can clear your local cache by going into the help menu (top-right corner) and selecting "clear user cache data". Just note that this will delete any offline data, so make sure all of your files are backed up to the cloud! Can you send me the new example step file that is having the issue?

On the .obj note - I think I misspoke in my original post. It's not that it won't export them correctly, it's just that step files do not include mesh data when exported. So any mesh files within the model, do not get exported into the step file. Without seeing the file, it is hard to give my recommendation for removing the mesh data from the model. You can try to right-click it and select Remove and see if it gives you any errors. My only concern is that features in your timeline (assuming it is turned back on) depend on that mesh file.

Thanks,

Thanks James, Yes, clearing the cache fixed the problem.  Can you update the error message to tell users to go clear their cache?
