Fusion 360 hangs when updating linked component

Hi,

I've run into a problem where I have a fairly complex design with several linked components that are then used as bases for sketches. I updated one of the linked components and when I update the link to get the latest version of it, Fusion hangs saying "computing Sketch1: 60%" in the lower right corner. I've left it for hours and it will never finish. I've attached a screenshot.

How do I recover from this situation? It would be very bad if a design can become unusable in this way.

Thanks,

/Patrik J.

Continuing trying to fix up my models, I've discovered the 'Save Copy As' function, which allows me to sort of export some of my components as discrete objects.  In some cases, this works very well.  I've been able to export them, and it brings the entire object history, the primitives, sketches, etc, everying.  So I can modify the entire history.  That's great.  This is the case for the pulley that was messed up, and I thought was the source of most of my problems.

However, some of the objects, in particular one that I'm still having a problem with non-sensical errors, when I export it, the history does NOT come with it.  Well, part of the history does, and brings it's warnings with it.  But the early history of the part, the primitives are totally missing, and none of the sketches are coming in.  I honestly have no idea how the part is being created, as there's no geometry.

In other cases, I'd have a warning on something as simple as a hole.  I don't know why, it's a very simple geometry, and it's not linked to anything.  The error message makes no sense to me.  I'd go in to Edit Feature, and see nothing wrong.  I could click OK, without changing a thing, and now the warning goes away?  Very strange.

Check out this screencast below. I think it will help to explain the behavior you are reporting.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

Thanks, that was helpful to me, too. I've noticed the behavior of the sketch being "left behind" in the top layer. One question, though: If I'm in an assembly, and I want to make a new component by starting with a sketch on the plane of an existing component, what's the proper procedure? I've tried making a new component, activating it, and then creating a sketch, but when i select the face of the existing component, it appears that the new component is de-activated and the sketch ends up being create at the toplevel anyway. How do I base the sketch on an existing face but still make it part of the new component?

You would want to be careful about this since it will create a dependencies in the design. See the below screencast for more detail about that. One other thing is you will then have to think about how editing the original component will impact the other component.

So far, I have not been able to reproduce the behavior you are mentioning. Would you mind sharing a screencast?

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I know it will create a dependency, that's kind of the point: I essentially want to make a bracket to support two existing components in their current locations. If those locations are shifted, I want the shape of the bracket to update.

Interestingly, your screencast worked as I would have hoped it would. Perhaps I did something wrong. I'll try it again and make a screencast if it doesn't work as it did for you.

Thanks!

/Patrik
