Fusion 360 destroys itself

I started Fusion

There were interface glichtes like the mouse courser gone in a new sketch

Then buttons became unresponsive and Fusion crashed.

Trying to start it again gives me now this message:

Screen Shot 2015-08-19 at 12.21.49 PM.png

This is also now the second time Fusion created this error when starting it. Last one was because after the update the app link did not work

or was still directed at the old web deploy version and not the new. Checked this time and the link is corrent.

Could you please at one point install Fusion like any other application? My OS X folder is filled with all those

all eb deploy garbage left overs ...

Going to wipe Fusion of the HD and re-install again.

Hello Claas,

I can't say I am familiar with this exact behavior but given the combinations of reports, I suspect that the most recent update failed, somehow, to update your dock icon to point to the newly updated application version.

Launching from the dock then loaded the old version which rather ungracefully started cleaning itself up... hence the poor behavior and the subsequent failure to restart.

When cleanup completed, that stale dock icon was removed as well, and that would be why you don't see it in it's former location.

The application launched by the installer has not been asked to stay in the dock, and that is why it remains at the far right.

May I ask a couple of questions:
Does the application launched by the installer function correctly?
If you carried out your plan to "..wipe Fusion of the HD and re-install again.", what is the process followed for the "wipe" step?

Finally, I may be able to find some confirmation for my hypothesis in the log files found at ~/Library/Application Support/autodesk.webdeploy.streamer.log and then investigate whether there is something we can do to prevent this in the future.

But what is past is past, and what is most important for your functional state is determining whether the current installed version is good. Launch with the installer, or more easily, from Launchpad, and if all is well, then just use the dock ui to mark fusion to "keep in dock" if that is what you desire, and hopefully, we will correctly update this during the next release.

If your installation is not currently functional, then we will have to find out what went wrong, but the most expedient solution may be to completely start fresh with the process.

Thanks,
Steven

This is what happened:

As stated before 2 weeks ago I had a similar issue - but I guess there I removed the wrong ICON.

After the update I had 2 in the doc.

However yesterday it was different.

I used the software the day before and no update was done.

I only had one icon in the doc.

I went to the icon source and it showed the usal Fusion file (file size and all the files in that folder)

So I assumed this must be different.

When I started the new installer it just asked me to launch Fusion because it was already corretly installed.

So I did and the app cleaned up the icon mess.

- this is just a mess, you guys make it incredible hard to clean this up with the way how you store the app honestly

Sorry... my mistake... the actual path should be ~/Library/Logs/autodesk.webdeploy.streamer.log. Note: "Library" is hidden from the finder, so you will have to use the terminal to get there or "Go To Folder..." (shift-command-G in the finder)

And yes, we do seem to be leaving unnecessary remnants of old versions. I can only apologize for this at the moment. If the application creates any files in the install folder post-install, this prevents the containing folder from being cleaned up. We should keep better track of these things.

You should, however, be able to safely delete any folder directly containing "Autodesk Fusion 360" that does not contain the "Autodesk Fusion 360" you are currently using.

Also, our Mac App Store release uses a more apple-centric deployment mechanism (of course).

Eric

Just go to the application support folder and in Autodesk delete the Fusion 360 and web deploy folder and then install Fusion again.

Nicely that one installs fast!

Hello Claas,

Sorry for the delay in respoding.  The log file had lots of data to wade through, and I had to use some deduction to reconstruct the situation.

In any case, I think my hypothesis is at least partially correct.  On 8-19, your installation was [background] updated to 2.0.1593... however, for some reason I can't be sure of, the next application invocation was not of 2.0.1593, but 2.0.1591, the previously released version.  This invocation does show some distress in the logic due to some missing files (ironically while doing clean-up).

After that, I also see the launch of the current version with the installer which at least appears superficially ok... and then evidence of a further update to 2.0.1596 and your indicated wipe-and-reinstall.

In any case, I thought I would update you so as to bring closure to the situation.

I suspect that there are some difficulties keeping the dock icon up to date.  Correcting this has a few technical barriers to overcome, so I can't be sure when the issue will be resolved.  Hopefully it doesn't happen frequently enought to be a total nuisance.  The symbolic link in ~/Applications, and by extension the entry in launchpad, should be fairly reliable until we can get this issue resolved.

Beyond that, it seems wrong that an application should try to uninstall itself even if it is not the most recently installed version.  We will try to put in some protection against this.

Thank you for your patience.

Eric,

Claas's suggestion to delete the webdeploy folder and re-install is in fact the most immediate way to restore you to functionality.

@svelez

Seing Eric had the same issue I had twice something must be wrong with the OS X version.

Fortunately Fusion 360 installs in no time that is pretty good!
