starting fusion 360

Hi,

It takes nearly 5 minutes to start fusion 360, from double clicking the icon on the desk top to seeing the model work space screen. Is this normal, if not, how do I speed up the process. My laptop is a HP Pavilion g6 64 bit operating system using windows 8.1 and an intel(R)Core(TM)i5-3210M CPU.

It can take a while to start up the application. It takes 37 seconds on my desktop computer (which is 3, maybe 4 years old):

  • HP Z600
  • 2.67 GHz Win 7 64-bit
  • 24 GB RAM
  • NVidia Quadro 5000 2.5 GB Dedicated 1.5 GB Shared Video Memory (VRAM).

I could see this time being stretched out into a couple of minutes in the right circumstances. A couple of things you may want to look into:

  • Anti-virus software could be actively scanning files and slowing down the operation - you may try disabling the A/V temporarily to see if there is any change in behavior
  • Update the driver for graphics card from the manufacturer's website (nvidia, amd, intel)
  • Kill unnecessary applications running in the background
  • Check system memory and make sure that you have plenty of Memory avaialble (check Task Manager CTRL + SHIFT + ESC > Performance Tab > memory panel
  • Check for interferences in network communications

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Hi,

I switched off the anti virus software before starting fusion 360, it took 2 minutes just to load the log in screen and then a further minute to load the model work screen, a total of three minutes. I am new to computers, so how do I improve on this performance of 3 minutes for loading this programme. My laptop has 1tb of memory.

You laptop had 1GB of Harddrive memory. But that's not what Nate is talking about.

The RAM memory is what is of concern here.

Hi,

My laptop has 1 terabyte of memory and 6.0GB of ram, which 5.89 GB is still usable.

What brand of anti-virus software are you using? It may help to add Fusion 360 to the exception list. If disabling the anti-virus software speeds up the performance, there is a good chance that the anti-virus software is actively scanning files and interfering with the normal operation of Fusion 360.

Did you get a chance to try updating the graphics driver?

Thanks,

Hi,

I have added f360 to my Norton Anti-Virus exclusion list, from double clicking the f360 icon to the login screen takes 90secs. When logged in, it takes a further 30secs to open the model work space. An improvement on 5 mins. The drivers are the latest versions.

The only other suggestions I could make (aside from upgrading hardware) are to optimize some settings in the operating system and the preferences in Fusion 360.

The below website has some pretty solid advice for the operating system.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/optimize-windows-better-performance#optimize-windows-bett...

The disabling Visual Effects suggestion can make a pretty nice difference if you have an older graphics card.

The below URL contains another suggestion to optimize settings in in Fusion 360 for performance.

http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-...

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Just to curb any miss understandings.  Your notebook has a 1TB Hard drive and 6GB of memory.  RAM is Random Access Memory. We commonly refer to RAM as just memory.  When your System Information says you have 5.89GB Usable it is refering to the total ammount of RAM that Windows can use after reserving a little bit for the graphics processor and/or other low level system stuff.  If you want to get a better view of how much RAM is being used at the moment open Task Manager.  CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is the shortcut to open Task manager, or you can Right Click the Windows Icon (8+).  If you really want to dig into what is doing what you can open the Resource Monitor.

It sounds like you have a pretty nice notebook.  However HP sometimes puts slow HDDs in their notebooks.  With HDDs bigger is not always better.  I would guess that it is usually more advantageous to have a faster hard drive than a bigger one.  I recommend replacing that 1TB drive with a solid state drive.  250GB~500GB drives are afordable and stupid fast compaired to the drive in your notebook.  Applications will start up faster and you will get more life out of your battery.  It can make a three year old notebook feel brand new and make a newer notebook feel like a hot rod.

Have fun 🙂

Hi,

I have done all of the recommended changes to my laptop. From double clicking the F360 icon to the log on screen now takes 65secs, from the log on screen to model work space screen now takes 55secs, a total if 2minutes.
