Flatten surface that has twist for pattern making.

Hi,

I am trying to flatten the surface that has a twist in order to make a pattern for cutting out.  Since the surface has a twist, and not a cylindrical or conical bend, I am under the impression that the sheet metal module will not work for this.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Karl

Hi!
A solution that seems to work is the following:
1. export the surface as a mesh (stl extension)
2. import into Autodesk Meshmixer. There go to edit->unwrap
3. export from meshmixer as svg or emf.
4. reimport in fusion 360 and do what you want from there. You will have a flat surface that you can convert to solid, you can drawing, etc.
I have attached some files to the message.

Unfortunately I can't post the stl or 3emf file, but I think it's pretty clear.
I was inspired by this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dalldQLphyo

Hi Fratiman,

Thanks for taking a look at the problem!  The process you outlined(and video link) work perfect for me.  Took me a minute to actually get Meshmixer installed, some of the links were dead at their website.

Thanks again!

Karl
