Find Features

I've been trying out importing STP files into Fusion which works great.

As it imports as a solid body, I'd like to be able to break it down so I can edit certain features.

This is done by the 'Find Features' option when I right click over the bodies. It seems to work fine, and I get a breakdown on my part in the browser.

However I find I am unable to edit certain features? ie: if a hole is 10mm, I'd like to change it to 9mm, but I can't seem to edit it.

Fillets I'm able to edit, the option to 'edit fillet' is listed when I right click on them.

I also find I can't rename the features under the browser. They show up as hole1, hole2, hole3, fillet 27, fillet 28 etc. I'd like to be able to rename them to the actual hole size they are, but I can't seem to do that.

It almost seems like the features are 'locked' from being changed, but I can't find any option to unlock them.

It sounds like you may be in a Direct Modeling Environment (Base Feature?). Try using directly modeling tools like Press Pull, Move, and Delete to modify the body. You should find that these commands are easily capable of modifying the model as required.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,

I see.

I guess what I was hoping was that I could use the 'edit hole' function on existing holes. If I create a hole within fusion, I can double click on the hole in the feature tree and it will open up the dropdown to edit the hole features. However existing holes from solidworks file can only be edited using the push/pull?

Pretty much I was trying to take a simple hole and change it to a cbore hole, but I guess I'll have to sketch the cbore in.

Hi Gujusttud,

I've moved this thread to the General forum instead of CAM to make it easier to find, as well as for others who might be looking for the answer to this to find it more easily.

Thanks!

James

Assuming there's no predefined commands, F360 has a "find feature" command though I personally don't really like it (more to how it functions then the actual function itself).

If this feature is not available, make sure you're in direct mode 😉

I'm not sure this is really a useable option. It only produces a few of the available features and none that I need. A part may have 20 features when you export it from Solidworks, but Fusion only "finds" three of them, not useable at ALL. Very frustrated!

It may not be usable to you, that does not mean it is not generally useful.

You may have to simply re-design some of it in Fusion 360.

If I need to 'redesign' my parts in Fusion in order to use them, then why would I change programs? Most of what I deal with is legacy parts from years of past design work. Reworking old designs is part of the profession and should be addressed by any new software. In order for me to seriously consider using this software, it must import previous designs in a form I can manipulate. Otherwise it's just another viewer.

I can only advise you what you likely should be doing in case you want to use Fusion 360.

If the parts originate in Solid Works and your post seems to indicate that you have access to it, what prevents you from using Solid Works ?

If the parts don't originate in Solid Works, does feature recognition work better there ?

You can manipulate parts imported from a variety of solid modeling formats directly. Feature recognition certainly makes this more convenient the more features are recognized, but it is not necessary. If you turn on timeline recording you have more manipulation options then with the direct modeling tools. By default all imported parts start without timeline recording and it must be explicitely enabled either for each file or the default behavior can be changed in the preferences.

If this does not provide you whith what you're looking for then Fusion 360 may simply not be the tool you need.
