pivot point with space navigator?

How do I set the pivot point for orbiting with the Space Navigator?  

Sometimes it is sensible, but sometimes it is set somehwere offscreen so the component I am working on wildly swings out of view. I don't understand what changes.

I use a Magic Mouse so there is no "middle mouse button".

Hi, you can use http://magicprefs.com to get a middle mouse button on magic mouse.

thanks for the suggestion, I will give magicprefs a try.

I would still like to understand the Space Navigator behavior.  When it works it is *really* nice (I use it with my left hand while mousing with my right).  When it doesn't, it is just frustrating.
