Fillet on two non-perpendicular faces

Hi,

 

I would like to add a fillet between these two faces, yet it always makes a wrong fillet shape.

I do get this a lot for my designs so if there is a solution it would really be helpful!

The problem might be in the union of the two faces right where they meet.

There is really no other solution than, for example hand modeling that fillet surface by surface.

I took this model into SolidWorks 2022 and it does the same thing there.

The reason is likely missing tangency between faces.

That's a bummer, I know in Siemens NX you had the option to fillet between faces and it would take the outer edges. 

Would be nice to see this later in an update.

Yes, that is certainly an apples-to-apples comparison 😉

 

I would love to see a demonstration how NX handles this. I believe if you spend some time observing the geometry and tangencies of your model you will find that this is  pretty impossible. 
there is s reason why the, front-facing edge can be filleted to a degree and the rear-facing cannot be filleted.

Can you show the Siemens NX solution to this?

You can do Face Fillets in Autodesk Inventor Professional and in SolidWorks - but that doesn't solve your issue.

I think I would have modeled this very differently as a monolithic solid that I then split into individual components.

That would ensure the face flows smoothly. (And also consider Design for Manufacturability.  Will this be injection molded or roto-formed plastic, or will it be steam bent wood?)

I don't have access to NX anymore but I believe the problem was the loft not connecting correctly to the face.

I've fixed the problem with the Merge Tool, although I had to delete my history first, after the Merge it was seamless and the fillet had no problem with the curve.

@TheCADWhisperer with monolithic solid, do you mean the Form feature? Or with surfacing? It's indeed a steam bend manufacturing.

Interesting technique! It does indeed fix the problem with lack of tangency between the faces, and that's the reason the fillet succeeds. It would be nice to get this command available in timeline based designs.

I don't have time to remodel this particular chair, but here is an example that I did in the past.

I modeled as one solid body (using surfacing/solids tools) and then Split into the individual components.

It would be near impossible to have smooth flowing faces from one component to the next if each component was modeled separately as done with the chair.

 

After the monolithic model is completed - then split into individual components (I then added fastening feature bosses not show in these images).

Can't quite see - but  I also included clearance between the mating components understanding that we cannot manufacture perfect parts...

Unfortunately I did this assembly years ago at the beginning of Fusion with direct editing, so there is no history or I would attach the file.

But I have done the same assembly many times (video) fully parametric in Autodesk Inventor Professional and in SolidWorks - including associative core/cavity molds.

Too bad. I do use the technique you show in the video often myself, but having examined the geometry of this chair a bit closer, I don't think it lends itself to that.

Since I have retired - I don’t have much time for modeling anymore (unless it is for a home remodeling project that I have procrastinated on for 20+ years. 😅).
