I tried to open a file the data transferred but no sketch and it left a ring that keeps rotating in the box ,now nothing works. The last time I worked with the program was july 2015 I was just starting then ,did I save the files wrong?

I am sorry to hear that! It is possible that the file was saved so long ago - but I would like to still take a peek at it. Can you invite me to the project (hit the people tab and add my email - james.youmatz@autodesk.com)? This way, I can check and see what might be going on.
