Failure to create rectangular pattern of feature

I created a simple example to show the problem that I always struggle with. I learned to pattern features, because they allow changing parameters and have the patterning work correctly.

The obvious feature to pattern never works.

Looking at the attached model I created a new component (labeled with fail) and combine the block with a foot as the tool and joined. Then I attempt to pattern the combine feature and it fails.

Patterning the feature of joining the foot to the body.

After entering parameters the desired result is shown, but it is an illusion because the pattern doesn't work.

Compute type adjust - no error but nothing added to body

Compute type identical - no error but nothing added to body

Compute type optimized - error and all pattern information is deleted

Why doesn't this work?

My working process involves creating a negative of the feature that I want to pattern and doing it with many extra steps.

And then combine with an larger block to cut out the part I don't want. Then I pattern the combine feature doing the cut I can pattern the feature and get the result that I want.

You got to think like Fusion does.  Timeline order matters.

See if you can break this....

Might help.....

You model can be created by Patterning Features, you just got a little out of sequence.  The video will show what I mean.  Model is attached.

Thanks to all of you. In the example the timeline did not exactly match the real model.

Also part of the complexity was that I had mixed up the affects of copying a body and a component. I though copying a body would cause changes to the copy to modify the original like it does for components.

So, in my real model I had all my basic body shapes defined and I was using combine with the create new component option to make sure I didn't change the originals.

Now that I understand that copying bodies is not a problem I can see that you are creating the feature already joined to the block body and then patterning the creation of the foot, instead of patterning the combine.

I noticed that the pattern examples you all provided used adjust and not optimized. I tried all three with your method and optimized causes an error but the other two work. Is there a simple explanation for this behavior?

I believe the answer to your final question is that Optimized is used when patterning bodies and components that are entities in themselves.  In this case the feature being patterned will be joining the base component as it is being patterned so the body has to adjust to the change.
