F3d Grabcad file won't open; need debug mode?!

Good day All,

I have a similar issue as described in thread Solved: Cannot open f3d file from GrabCAD - Autodesk Community - Fusion 360

In short: the F3d assembly won't open because there is a linked file missing. Mark deleted the missing linked file in debug mode (which I can't seem to find) and solved the issue.

I tried to get in touch with Mark Hughes who solved the issue in that case but can't seem to get in contact.

Is there anybody who can help me?

Regards

Jeroen

Hi etfrench,

I wasn't aware on how to attach the actual file to the previous post, in this reply environment I do see the option.

Please see attached file.

In your download folder, there should be an _XRef_ folder.  In that folder will be the referenced files. The Throttle assembly file and the TBar file should open for you.  Is this enough?

Hi etfrench,

In the grabcad folder there is only the F3D file, only this and no other file types what could have anything to do with F360.
I'm a bit familiar with Solid edge and aware the assy is build up from several files. i assumed F360 is different in this.

The below is the downloaded from grabcad.

When opening this F360 gives the error below.

When you attempt to open the file in Fusion 360, the _XRef_ folder will be created.  It contains the external referenced files.xRef.jpg

Hi etfrench,

Thanks for helping me out.

I think I know what you mean by the Xref folder being created, it does not happen when I try to open the assembly.

The file you attached doesn't open as well.

Still getting the same error.

Ive tried a different assembly from Grabcad and it works fine. still not seing the Xref file being created but it opened without problems.

Do you know what Mark is doing or means with the debug mode Mark hughes is talking about in the post  Solved: Cannot open f3d file from GrabCAD - Autodesk Community - Fusion 360 ?

Regards Jeroen

The text command “Options.DebugEnvironment /show” adds a couple of buttons for local save and open, it also adds the ability to open locally saved f3z files. This might let you open this file, then you'll probably want to break any links to external references and disable history to get rid of any warnings in the timeline. Don't have time at the moment to experiment with this file.

Thanks @etfrench  @HughesTooling for the help so far.

I eventually found the text command.

Eventough I can't seem to fix the problem I learned some things (and now see this forum in French without me changing the language and settings still set to englisch and I'm dutch so where that came from, I dont know. Bug maybe?).

Can you open the file at all etfrench? I'm having doubts that the file could be opened at all.

It opens, but only after selecting another unrelated valid .f3d.  That also seems to be the only way to break out of the failure.

First error msg:

ErrMsg.JPG

After selecting a different file:

Err2.JPG

Here's what it looks like opened:

BadFile.JPG

CancelNot.JPG

@Phil.E  The Cancel button on the Explorer dialog doesn't cancel the open file request.  The user is stuck in a loop until he or she can find a valid file to open (which by the doesn't actually open, the bad file does.)
