Disappearing tool tips

When I hoover over any menu option the tool tip flashes on then immediately dissapears.  As a new user, this is killing me.  Any idea why or how to fix it?

Using

Fusion 360 version  2.0.1870

under a student plan on an Azus desktop, Windoze 8.1 .

This problem happens to me and I've also seen it posted several times. I think the only known "fix" is to reboot your PC. Others have recommended a reinstall, but the problem comes and goes for me and I've never reinstalled.

Well, that seemed to work, for the moment anyway, but it seems like a rather exreme solution.  No other program seems to have this problem that I am aware of or have noticed.

I will try to see if I can keep track of what I  do in the interm if it suddenly happens again since it might well be caused by a different program or something.

Thank you.

Just out of curiosity, am I the only one that finds Fusion to be counter-intuitive?  Or at least quirkily unique?  I am a toolmaker and most of my 3d modeling has always been done in MasterCam, but I have always been pretty good at making things work right out of the box.  Fusion, however, has confounded me again and again.  I can understand the need to plan ahead, in some respects, but it seems totally resistant to any slight alteration of the workflow.

Half the time I cannot even figure out how to redimension an object, which is critical to being able to design with the program.

Perhaps I need a better grasp of the difference between 'sketches', objects, and components because there is a huge difference between creating a solid object and extruding a sketch if  I need to alter it later, or am I missing something?

Many thanks for using Fusion 360. I'm not sure if you know the tutorials. Maybe, it could give your some help.

You're not alone. If Fusion didn't have FEA at a bargain price, I would have given up on it. I've become proficient enough at the things I do on a regular basis that I don't feel like the software is holding me back, but on other systems I got to that point in weeks, not months.

I start almost everything by creating, then activating a component. I then create a sketch and extrude, revolve, etc. to create the bodies. I find this makes it easier to make changes because everything is "packaged" within that component. Re-activate the component and the timeline shows only the activities related to that component. I very rarely use the solid objects and then only if the final part is a box or cylinder.

I have the same problem.  Sometimes it is possible to make the tool tip stay on the screen if you drag a floating menu down to the bottom of the screen before hovering over the feature.

Just saw your older remarks. How is it going learning Fusion 360? Please let me know if you are still having trouble learning it.

In the mean time, we have just refreshed our learning page with a set of nice tutorials, give them a try!

http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/learn-training-tutorials

Also, we are always adding fresh learning content to the Youtube page too, so don't forget about that. There are literally dozens of tutorials, tips, and otherwise useful videos.

https://www.youtube.com/user/AutodeskFusion360

If you are the reading type, rather than the video type, try the attached pdfs from my Autodesk University 2015 classes.

Thanks,

It worked! I dragged the flowing menu bar to the bottom of the screen (end then returned it to the top). Even after restarting the application, tool tips stay as expected. Weird.

btw. In a small info box (inside the app) I got the information that my graphics card might not work optimally... I'm using a laptop with i5-3rd generation processor with the integrated Intel HD 4000 series graphics core.

That video card chip set will run Fusion 360, but may suffer from some graphics performance issues. It really depends on how complex your model is: number of faces, edges, components, etc.

Did you shut off the graphics effects? The ones that use the most video resources are Anti-Aliasing, Ambient Occlusion, and reflections.

Hi Phil,

thank you for your suggestion!

I've used the option "Limit all effects to provide optimum performance" found in ?(Help)->Graphics Diagnostic.

Rebooting will not solve the problem for me. It seems it doesn't actually disappear, it becomes hidden by the main window of the application, see image (cursor is hovering over "Decal").

I tried "limit all effects" but it doesn't help. This is very annoying, please fix the problem.

This is my GPU information if it helps to solve the issue I don't know... :

[GPU Information]
GPU Device: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
GPU RAM: 2048 MB
GPU Driver API: DirectX 11.0
GPU Driver Version: 1.6.839
GPU Driver Date: 06/03/2016

[Graphics Effects Settings]
Anti Aliasing: On
Ambient Occlusion: On
Object Shadow: On
Ground Shadow: On
Ground Reflection: On
Selection Display Style: Normal
Transparency Effect: Better Display

[Notes]
1. If you see any graphics display abnormalities, updating to the latest graphics card drivers could help resolve them; please check with your GPU vendors to download and install the latest graphics card drivers.

2. The effects could slow down the graphics rendering; try to limit them for optimum performance.

Did you try this solution from earlier in this thread?

"It worked! I dragged the flowing menu bar to the bottom of the screen (end then returned it to the top). Even after restarting the application, tool tips stay as expected. Weird."

Be sure to dock the toolbar at the bottom and then drag back to top to dock again in the default position.

Let us know if this works. Also you could try switching your graphics to DX9. Look in Preferences > Graphics Driver (top page of Preferences).

Here is the problem we face trying to fix this: Unless we have a reproducible case, it's almost impossible to debug something like this. Software developers have tools that can look for events and report what is going on when the event happens. If they cannot reproduce the event, it can be very hard to figure out why the event might happen for you.

That being said, there is a bug logged for this (with no reproducible steps) and we can take a look at the code to see why this is allowed to happen, i.e. improper handling of app window/tooltip window relationships. It's possible we can find something this way.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,

Strangely enough, this bug started happening for me recently, and I can reproduce it consistently in a very simple way – simply try to view a pop over tooltip that overlaps the main Fusion 360 window or any dependent window. Inevitably, every time, from the start of the app in full-screen or windowed, persisting through any number of gyrations, I always see the pop up tip content pop-up very briefly and then get redrawn underneath the F360 window content.

In my experience, coming from videogame design, we normally see this sort of behavior when the windowing GUI architecture is drawing window content and pop-up content in the wrong order because they've confused Z-depth. All it takes is flipping the wrong sign somewhere, and suddenly your layered window rendering is going back to front rather than front to back. The fact that the pop-up appears very briefly just before the window refresh suggests that's definitely some component of the problem.

I too am having this issue and it is most annoying.  I have tried the "Moving the Tool Bar" technique with no change in the ToolTip behaviour.  I was able to make the tool tips show one way and it is not a workable solution but might help your programmers understand the problem.

If I RESIZE Fusion and move the toolbar off the Fusion window (covering desktop or another app) then the TOOLTIPS will stay on.  This seems to lend credence to the suggestion that the TOOLTIP screen is being overwritten by Fusion.

Hope you can resolve the issue soon.

Thanks for posting.

We are aware of this problem and working the solution.

Have you tried minimizing all other open apps so nothing is open behind Fusion?

Thanks,

I also have this annoying issue, and it seems none of the solutions help. It certainly looks like a z-depth issue, because the tooltip does stay open, it's just that it ends up behind the main F360 window, so it becomes hidden. If I drag the main window over the edge of my screen to the right to force the tooltip to pop up on the left side of the menu, I can see parts of it, as shown in this screenshot:

We are aware of this issue and working to fix it in a coming update.

The reason it hasn't been fixed yet is we have not had a comprehensive fix for it until recently and did not want to put a bandaid on it. The fix is currently being tested and validated for release.

Thanks,
