Difficulty using joints / ball joint

I am attempting to join a vertical support between the upper and lower frame of a simple camper shell I am working on but I continue to run into an issue while using the joint tool.

This is what happens when I attempt to join using ball joints the vertical support. Am I going about this the wrong way? I'm not exactly a F360 wizard. 

 

 

I sent my fusion file to a friend and he was able to get the stick to join as expected and then extrude to cut and fill the gaps.  I cant add the fusion file in such a public form since the camper shell is a paid set of plans and I do not want to stick what I have already drawn out in the open.

Hello-

 

It's hard to tell what "exactly" is causing the error without having access to the design, but I did notice that a lot of your parts are "grounded" (they have the little pin icon next to them in the browser".

 

For example, let's assume the bottom frame parts are grounded in place.  When you go to create the 2nd ball joint, if the parts/assy you are joining to are grounded, they wouldn't be able to move to the location where the vertical post is at.

 

I recommend grounding the bottom frame parts/assy and then unground everything else and see if you get a different result.

Thank you for that screen cast. That is almost what I wanted to accomplish, I'm going to give what you did a try.

 

What I had done in my drawing is the top frame and bottom frame are a set distance apart  and I need the vertical member to span that gap so I can then use the extruded cut and extrude to make the vert the correct length so I can then in the real world cut its compound miter and weld it to the frames. I used a rigid joint to make the front faces of the top and bottom frame to be 21" from the bottom of the top frame to the bottom of the bottom frame. the top frame is then 2" forward of the lower frame. if that makes sense.
