Deleting Files

Have been away from Fusion 360 for a couple months.  Getting started back up I wanted to clean up a project folder by deleting a few unneeded files.  Easy right?  Nope.

First thing, I seleced two files and chose delete.  Got spinning "busy" graphic which just sat there.  One of the two files finally said delete not available or something like that, but the other just hun with the spinning graphic.  I closed fusion and reopened it.  Both of those file dissappeared in front of my eyes.  Strange.  Ok, well it is done.

Then I went to delete another file and it tells me it is used in another file and I cant delete it.  I look for referenced files.  There are none.  Anyway, still can't delete it.

Finally, I tried to delete another file and it tells me it is in use and can't be deleted.  It is not in use, and never was part of any other file.

Welcome back right?  Didn't get even one little thing done and I am already discouraged and frustrated...looking for help.  Not a very productive return to Fusion 360.

Update: Tried to delete these files in A360 too, operation hung for quite a while and then I got a message that the "operation could not be completed", or something to that effect.

When you click on the file in A360 do all the design reference show nothing, no numbers in brackets. Something you could try in Fusion is clear user cache data, make sure you don't have any uploads in progress as they will be deleted. Also is Fusion up to date as you haven't used it for a while, I had some problems with the data panel yesterday just before Fusion told me there was an update available.

@HughesTooling, nothing in A360, in fact it tells me explicately that the file is not used by any other designs.  Uses, Used-in, and Drawings, all clear.  I cleared the cache in Fusion 360 and it restarted as part of that process.  I still can't delete the file.  It tells me it is in use.  In data panel it also tells me it is in use by me.  It defiantely is not in use.  The other file I cannot delete either.  Dunno.

You can see the part below was updated in mid Spetember.  I had not opened it since then before trying to delete it.

Don't sweat this Mark.  Even if there is a way to get the files deleted it is clear there are major issues with file management.  I am current by the way, that was the first thing I did this morning.

I WOULD like to hear from Autodesk though...the guys I PAY for these headaches.

Paul is there any chance the designs are loaded in an a360 mobile app? I had some issues before the last update where I couldn't copy or move files. I closed my a360 mobile app. Logged out of my browser and then logged out of fusion desktop program. After I logged back in all was fine. At least worth a shot. Everything should update real time but logging out and in can help the process.

Good luck

Sorry for the issue. Can you try something quick. The "in use" means Fusion thinks it is open by you. This is easy to clear. Simply open the design, then close it.

@schneik-adsk, well that was easy.  It worked.  Clearly that should not be necessary and is not intuitive, but I don't think I have to tell you that.  Still though, I have another file that I cannot delete.  This one is not referencing any files, but I suspect at one point or another it was.  In other words, I beleive an assembly used to use that file in an old version.  Is this why I cannot delete it?  What is the best way to hunt down the assosiated file/version so I can disassociate it and delete the file?

Yes, your suspicion is probably right:  If that design was referenced by another design at one time, it is still marked as a dependency for the referencing (parent) design.  The reason is:  You can "promote" old versions of the parent, including the one that referenced the design you are trying to delete.  Today, the only way to get around this is to delete the parent first.  Unfortunately, there is no way today to prune out old versions (although that has been requested and is on the to-do list).  If you want to keep the parent, you can copy the most-recent revision to a new design.  This will not bring along old versions.  Then, you can delete the original, and then delete the design you originally wanted to delete.

Hope this helps.  I realize that this is a bit tedious today, and we are working toward a more streamlined workflow, but we have lots to do.  Personally, I just create a "trash" folder in my projects and move things in there that I don't need anymore.  It sometimes offends my need for cleanliness, but I've learned to work with it.  And occasionally, I actually do go looking around that trash folder for something I want, and am glad that it's still there.

Ugh.

PLEASE ALLOW US TO TURN OFF VERSIONS ALL TOGETHER!!!

I would be so glad to manage this stuff myself.  There is no reason I shouldn't be able to delete a file when I know exactly what the impact is.

Having the same problem.  Two files cannot be deleted due to:  "A version of this design has been referenced by drawings or other designs and cannot be deleted."   I have opened every file, and these files are not present in other any other files, nor do these non-deletable files contain any data.

How does one delete a file?

If some software refuses to allow you to delete a file, then take it at face value.

Create a folder named ZZ-Discard so it will be at the bottom of any alphabetically sorted list.

Move the files you think you don't need to that folder.

Ignore them forever.

Ya never know... you -may- have used something in a file in another file but have simply been unable to see that fact for whatever reason. If you ever see something someplace else with the ZZ-Discard associated with it you'll instantly know what happened.

I don't know whether you've thought about version saves and how they affect an external linked file. If you insert an external design and make a couple of version saves then delete the external file from the design it will still be linked to the design history so you will not be able to delete it.

So lets say you have design A version 1 and you insert design B, you make a few saves of design A then at version 10 you remove design B so design A V10 doesn't have design B. Design B is still referenced in design versions v1-v9 so it's locked and you can't delete it.

If you look at the overview for one of the files you can't delete does it show any thing under used in or drawings?

Spot on-Users should be given the power to manage version control.  I have thousands of files now it seems.  These are from maybe 10 projects I work.  I would delete older versions, but it takes sooooo long to manage them.
