Creating an object from curves positioned in different angles

Is there a way to create an object/body from a set of curves which are distributed in 3d with different angles to each other? Something like a loft, but with curves positioned in many directions (see the examples below). In my understanding with a loft, all curves are horizontally aligned in 2 dimensions, just shifted from basic sketch in the 3rd one. Whereas what I need is that curves can be in any position to each other.

(These are just simplified examples to illustrate the functionality. In reality the curves might be any organic shape being in any angles to each other).

Hi @Anonymous ,

 

Yes you can, but you will have to be more specific. The examples shapes you have added can be created with only 1 or 2 sketches and with various tools. They are very basic shapes!

If you have other body shapes which are more complex, then please attach them and we will help you.

Hi Ben, of course they are basic shapes! That's what I wrote below the examples - that they are just basic examples.

I didn't give any particular object on purpose, because I don't need to create a specific object. I need a FUNCTION which would produce that result for any given curves.

 

And no, the solution isn't to sketch and create the object manually according to the curves.

And no, the solution isn't to create a form and modify it manually to match the curves.

The function you are looking for is a loft. Your understanding of what a loft does is likely incomplete.

You can loft between a number of curves that are at arbitrary orientations in space.

Now I can see that you are correct that they can be angeled. I just tried it with a simpler example and it worked, but it doesn't work for majority of other curves. I get an error or the button OK is grey and unaccessible.

Can you post a screencast how to do it for objects in the examples above and the one here below please?

Loft works with from here to there, and just to make it more complicated, will not tolerate self intersections, or Rails that are not connected to profiles.

 

that said, those 3 profiles are not apparently connected, so you are left with three patched plates.

I was hoping there could be some 3rd party plugin that someone knows about? Or perhaps there is some other tool outside of Fusion 360 which can do it?

That would depend on the parametrization of the solid shape calculator (e.g. how much the curves/edges would be defined as creased or smoothed), but in general I would expect similar approximation of the curves as loft does. That means this object would look like a kind of a deformed potato shape.

To answer your question directly,  I don't know of any computer/software tool that can do what our asking.  The only tool I can think of would be the human brain.

No it would not. It is easy to create such a "potato" shape and derive such curves from the shape. However the reverse is not the case because these curves only describe that shape at those plane intersections and as such don't contain all the information required to re-create the shape.

These curves would also just be an approximation and would follow the surface precisely only within a given tolerance.

 

There are two ways to create such shapes with commonly available software: Sub-D quad polygon meshes and NURBS surfaces.

Both require a quadratic mesh of control vertices or CVs for short. That needs to be taken in consideration when creating the curves to create such an object.

Hi Mrs. Katy Sramkova,

 

The question you are so bravely posted on this forum is a quite complex one. It touches deep roots of topology.

It is also not precise enough to give a definitive answer. What is missing is the definition of relations of these curves to the projected outcome. F360 gives tools to define such relations and execute them so the same curve(s) can be a base for different topological outcomes ( e.g. circle can produce a circular patch, sphere, cylinder...).

Those basic tools can be merged/intermingled together creating the number of possibilities so great that (given unlimited? time) current universe could burst, collapse or seek quarkitative easing.

So,… how to intermingle F360 topological tools? Many designs/examples are available on F360 and within is a quite valuable library.

As I pointed above, most important, however, is the clear definition of the particular objective/outcome. The search for the global solution (as a topological universe is so wast) will not work. Also, as pointed rightfully by Mr. LaughingCreak, ‘the human brain’ would be a very valuable asset here.

Having said that you must be aware of significant sometimes arduous and in case of organic objects quite back-breaking/mind-breaking experiences as F360 is not strong in this area.

Dependent upon your objectives, skill level, determination and a bit of lack… everything within constraints of NATURAL LOW is possible.  Achieving the impossible requires miracle(s) which happen from time to time, but it does not require any effort, just patience.
