Creating a custom thread M42* 0.75 pitch - thread profile have dissapeared

Hi fellow fusioners.

I am trying to create an adapter for an CCD astronomy camera. It has to have a M42*0.75 thread. I cannot find any specifications online.  I found the specifications for m33 *0.75 and used them. Is this a suitable solution?

I have created the the XML file in the correct directory as follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<ThreadType>
<Name>Astro Filter</Name>
<CustomName>Astro Filter</CustomName>
<Unit>mm</Unit>
<Angle>60</Angle>
<ThreadSize>
<Size>42</Size>
<Designation>
<ThreadDesignation>M42x0.75</ThreadDesignation>
<CTD>M42x0.75</CTD>
<Pitch>0.75</Pitch>
<Thread>
<Gender>external</Gender>
<Class>4g6g</Class>
<MajorDia>41.908</MajorDia>
<PitchDia>41.4595</PitchDia>
<MinorDia>41.066</MinorDia>
</Thread>
<Thread>
<Gender>internal</Gender>
<Class>6h</Class>
<MajorDia>41.283</MajorDia>
<PitchDia>41.588</PitchDia>
<MinorDia>42.129</MinorDia>
<TapDrill>41.25</TapDrill>
</Thread>
</Designation>
</ThreadSize>
</ThreadType>

However fusion crashes so I know something is wrong. All I really nead is the internal dimension.

Thanks

Looks like you have the internal sizes wrong. I already had a a M49x0.75 photo filter thread XML so I just added M42, see attached file.

I used M30x0.75 as a template as it's easy to add 12 to the sizes.

Hi Mark, You are a champion, the xml file worked perfectly. I never knew that threads could be so complicated.

Thanks for your help

I am brand new to 3d modeling and trying to learn a few things so I can prototype some ideas I have for my Astronomy hobby. The M48x0.75 thread size is common for a lot of extensions/reducers and other attachments on our optical systems.  How do I measure one of my existing parts for comparison against the m49 you posted. I was able to add that to my XML list and it works great. Thanks for posting the original specs.

I'm looking for the following threads for some Camera adapters:

M50 x 1.0

M52 x 0.75

M52 x 1.0

M55 x 1.0

It would be great if someone could help me out with an XML file.

@rolf4NGLJ File attached. I added 1 and 0.75 pitch threads for 49, 50, 52 and 55.

See this page for info on where to install.

Hmmm, you beat me to it!

(I had originally used a different word than 'Hmmm' but for some reason it was replaced with a bunch of asterisks after submission. I've no idea why as it's an everyday word and I'm not aware of it being the slightest bit offensive!).

If this answers your question please mark the thread as solved as it can help others find solutions in the future.

I've created a Windows application (and now Mac as well) for creating custom thread files for Fusion. You can find out about it here. Hope you find it useful.
If you need to know how to offset threads for 3D printing then I've created a guide here which you might find useful.
If you would like to send me a tip for any help I've provided or for any of my software applications you've found useful, you can do this via my Ko-Fi page here.

@HughesTooling and @MRWakefield you guys are awesome!

Just installed the threads in the appropriate folder and checked that they are ready to use now. I'm relatively new to Fusion 360 and I can only say that it is a great feeling receiving such swift and adequate support from you.

Thank you!

I just noticed an error in my XML file where the tapping drill size for M55x1 was set to 51mm when it should be 54mm! That's what happens when you do things in a hurry! Apologies for that.

Please find corrected version attached. Hopefully there are no more errors Smiley Wink

If this answers your question please mark the thread as solved as it can help others find solutions in the future.

I saw you guys were being really helpful and wondered if you could supply the same information for a filter ring with 102mm diameter and another one with 72mm diameter.

Thank you sooo much in advance!!

Cheers

Felix

Here's a nifty calculator that helps you figure out the dimensions to create your custom thread profiles: http://theoreticalmachinist.com/Threads-MetricMProfile.aspx

Hi,

Maybe it will look like a silly question as I am new to F360.

I can model a thread (in my case T2, thanks to the xml provided here) but when I am send it to Cura for 3D printing, I receive a blank cylinder, without the thread. Any idea to help ?

Thanks a lot.

When you create a thread, there is a small box that you need to tick,
the box is called "Modeled".

Hi everyone! Seeing a lot of the same complaints after much searching regarding custom thread sizes.

I need to add a 1 1/8"-28 (1.125"-28 called out on the .dwg) threading to a small part.

The piece is fully designed except for the threading. After messing with every setting, I've exhausted my efforts searching the net. Fusion 360 seems to be the best option to complete this task, but the lack of customization on the thread tool leaves much to be desired as everyone has pointed out.
