Copy/Paste a Sketch by dragging in Browser?

I'm looking for quicker way to copy/paste Sketches from one component to another.

Dragging a sketch or sketches from one Component to another in the Browser seems like a logical and intuitive way to do this. So, in the Browser, I dragged a Sketch from one Component and to another; I held down the Control key and I saw a faint blue + symbol appear, so I assumed the sketch would be copied to the Component. But nothing happened. I also tried dragging 2 sketches at the same time, with the same result.

It seems to me that this would be a useful feature.

Any thoughts?

Or ideas about quicker ways to copy/paste several sketches than what is described in Product Documentation?

Thanks.

Wondering how the copy paste of a sketch and it’s content, into a pre existing component, can be of any assistance to you?

Copy any sketch’s articles to a current sketch is a simple process.

Might help....

Thanks @davebYYPCU for your reply.

I should have said that I want to copy a Sketch to an empty Component, so I can create variations of the sketch in different components.

I see that I can move a Sketch from one Component to another in the Browser by dragging.

And I can copy a Body from one Component to another in the Browser.

I'm not clear what you meant by: "Copy any sketch’s articles to a current sketch is a simple process"

I do often copy sketches or sketch elements within the current sketch, using the "Copy a Sketch" steps from Product Documentation, just hoping for a quicker way; but not critical.

So that would be Copy / Paste New (Component)

If you are just looking to copy a sketch from an existing component to create a new component, the process is outlined in my video.  The new sketch, in the new component, can be edited in any way you desire because it is not linked to the original component.  Do remember it is also not full constrained or dimensioned.  Please ask if you need further help.

Edit:  I also forgot to mention, the copied sketch can be pasted to a new component outside the original file if needed.

@jhackney1972

Sorry but that seems to be an excellent way to strip constraints, dimensions and associativity between original and result, a little off topic?

The original poster has asked how to copy a sketch from one component to another and I answered that.  I also warned him of the lost of constrains, dimensions and associativity to the original.  I answer a question as I read it, you may or may not agree, that is your choice.

Based on your posts I would say that your workflow would need closer examination and it would probably help if you’d post some example designs. As @davebYYPCU @Has already mentioned, there is no need to copy a sketch into an empty component.

Thanks @davebYYPCU for that suggestion. Sounds good.

When I tried it, I could not find Paste New or Paste New Component as an option. I did see Save Copy As, which allows me to create a new file containing the sketch.

My steps were:

  • I copied the Sketch
  • I right clicked on the top element in the Browser and looked for Paste New or Paste New Component (didn't see either)
  • I chose Save Copy As
  • I opened the new file and saw the sketch

Any suggestion about how to do the Paste New Component step?

Thanks,

John

Thanks @jhackney1972 for the video, and thanks @davebYYPCU and @TrippyLighting for the suggestions that copying a sketch into an empty component may be less than optimal work flow.

Paste New is only valid for components.

So you can create a sketch in a component and then paste new that component (incl. sketch).

Rule No.1 - Sketches reside in Components.

One active Component per part.

Your workflow was not demonstrated, it was presumed the sketch you wish to move / copy, was in a Component in the first place.

Select Component that owns the sketch, Copy then you have the Paste, or Paste New option  - to create the editable sketch copy, you use Paste New.  Do not use Paste, as you will not have independent editing capability.

Might help....

Thanks to all who responded. I have a much better understanding of copying/pasting Sketches as an element of a Component.
