Constrain Circle to Edge of Rectangle with Overhang

Hey guys,

I need some help. I’m struggling to find the best way to constrain these circles to the outer rectangle. The goal is to be able to resize the circles and rectangle independently without the circle moving further off the edge of the rectangle or be further cut off when the rectangle is resized. I would also like to maintain the ability to resize the connecting space between both circles.

Please forgive me if there is a better way to design this, I’m still learning but I’m all ears so feel free to yell at me / provide critique.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

1. create a centerline as a construction line
2. then the circles are created starting from this line
3. the distances of the centers to each other and possibly to the edge are dimensioned.
4. if the circles are to have fixed edge distances, these are dimensioned instead of the circle diameter.
5. in the parameter control, user-defined parameters should be defined for desired sizes.

Fully define your sketches (see Attached) and behavior on edit will be rock solid and predictable.

(There are a couple of other changes I would make to your sketch - but this should give you some ideas.)

Thanks a ton for editing the file. It took me some stumbling through it, but I finally got the mechanics down in my own file. Fully defining the sketch makes total sense, doing it with a dimension didn't even cross my mind, probably because I'm so new at this.

I initially had trouble sketching the dimension between the edge of the circle and the edge of the rectangle and it was because I had Sketch 1 visible. For some reason it wouldn't let me dimension when Sketch 1 visibility was turned on.

Another thing I noticed was that once I dimensioned everything, the overhang of the circle in my file appears to be cut into halves, but on your file when I hover over it, it appears as a full shape. Any ideas why that is? And does it really matter?

Examine the Attached file, especially Sketch2.  I try to avoid repeated dimensions.

I would probably never ever dimension to the corner of a hexagon (especially one intended for a hex nut).

I would dimensions across flats.

Using the BORN Technique - I would create all sketches on origin planes if possible and practical.

This ensures rock solid, predictable and robust sketches.
