Hi Fusion Configurations folks!
I just wanted to follow up in this thread to let you know we've added a couple of significant improvements to Fusion Configurations recently that many of you requested and might find helpful in your design work.
Both of these new workflows fall under the umbrella of Custom Configurations, and when combined should help you achieve what you need more easily if you create highly flexible, customizable products. Here's some specific info about the new workflows and links to the documentation in case you want to take a deeper dive.
Customize
In the most recent release (July 2026), we introduced Customize, the next step in the Custom Configurations journey. Instead of manually pre-creating every possible combination as a row in the configuration table, you can now embed your design intent into the table itself and create individual configurations only when and where you actually need them.
The Customize workflow gives you end-to-end flexibility across the lifecycle of a configurable product. You can declare which aspects are highly flexible, test combinations before committing to them, create new configurations on demand from the context of downstream workflows, and review everything back in the configuration table as the source of truth.
Here's the high-level workflow:
- Customize: In the configuration table, right-click any Theme Table column in the top table and click Customize to declare it as a custom aspect. You can Uncustomize at any time to change it back to a non-custom aspect.
- Test: Use the new Test Row to try combinations without creating them all up front. When you click Test, Fusion computes the configuration and activates it if it exists. If the combination is unique, you can still click Add Configuration to manually add it to the table. Configurations with the same non-custom values are grouped under a common parent.
- Use Downstream: When you use configurations in downstream workflows like Insert, Switch Configuration, or Derive, the Select Configuration dialog now supports customization. Each existing configuration from the table displays as a card, and you can expand a parent to pick an existing customization. In the new Customize section, you can select values for any Custom Aspect. If the combination you need already exists, Fusion reuses it instead of creating a duplicate. If it's new, you can name it, and Fusion creates it on the fly in context. Once you save the assembly, Fusion generates the new customization and displays it back in the configuration table.
- Review: Once you've created customizations downstream, Fusion displays them all back in the configuration table of the source Configured Design, nested beneath their logical parents. If you or a teammate has the design open, new customizations appear in the configuration table automatically as they're created. No extra save required.
- Rules: The Customize workflow pairs well with Configuration Rules. You can author rules between configured aspects across any top table column. Fusion enforces the rules in the configuration table and in all downstream workflows, including the new Customize section in the Select Configuration dialog. So your highly flexible product still only produces valid, manufacturable combinations.
This initial release supports Theme Table columns. We intend to add support for other top table column types (like parameters) in the future if there's demand for it.
Configuration Rules
Back in April 2026, we added Configuration Rules to the Fusion Design Extension. This lets you create logical rules that drive or limit configured aspect values in a Configured Design. This helps automate the combination of options in highly configurable products to ensure you can only create manufacturable configurations. Configuration Rules uses a low-code visual rules engine to make authoring rules more accessible and easier to understand.
- Drag and drop blocks into the Configuration Rules canvas to build your logical rules.
- Turn each rule on when you’re ready to apply it.
- Apply the rules, and existing values in the configuration table will update to adhere to the rules.
- As you continue to create and modify configurations, Fusion enforces the rules in real time to maintain consistency and manufacturability.
And here are the documentation links for both of these:
Let us know if you try either or both of these new Custom Configurations workflows. We'd love to hear if they help you in your work, and also if you need more from them. Always happy to hear feedback and advocate for improved experiences on your behalf!
