Components alignment

I am having creating a component to add on another face of a component. I need to distinguish the colors between the two. I have a box shape where on the side of the walls, I am trying to add another rectangle. These will be different fabric colors. When I try to add color of the rectangle inside the rectangle, it wants to colors the entire wall of the box. Need help distinguishing the two shapes. Picture is provided.

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm a little unclear as to what you are asking, but my guess is you are having trouble differentiating which face is which when adding an appearance in the render workspace. Does that sound about right? For example, when you go to select the big rectangular face and apply an appearance, it applies it to the whole face, but when you go to select the little rectangular face (which according to your screenshot is a patch?) it applies the appearance but it is unseen as the faces overlap? I went ahead and created a screencast below demonstrating some tips I think might be helpful! (Please note the first half of my screenshot I tried to demonstrate what I think your error was. Please let me know if that was correct. Then in the second half, I used the split face command in the Modify menu to split that face using the rectangular sketch i had created.)

Hopefully this helped answer your question. If so, please feel free to mark this answer as a solution, that way others can benefit from this thread as well. If you have any more questions, or would like some clarification, don't hesistate to let me know!

Thanks,
