Combine/cut not working

Trying to make tab joints on a couple of panels.

Have sketch out top panel on the two sides which have already been extruded.

So I sketch my tabs using rectangle tool then extrude down,(-5mm) since I'm on the top plane and need to extrude down into the sides.

This creates top panel with the tabs but the tabs don't cut into the sides, no problem I'll use the 'combine' tool and do a cut, but this doesn't work the tabs dont cut into the sides.

So the cut tool doesn't delete geometry, it really just splits it apart.

If you check your bodies folder, you'll find several bodies that relate to these extra parts on the sides. You can delete them, or hide them - your call.
