Cant round off edges

Hi,

Okay I am quite new to this design software but I am stuck on a problem.

I am trying to design an F1 steering wheel based on the Red Bull F1 cars. Ik have outlined most of the form and starting working on the handles. These need to be separate parts or else it cant fit on my 3D printer. Now I have extruded the form but now I want to round off the edges to give them a nice feel in my hand. The fillet option does not work and I do not know how to proceed.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

@Anonymous - if you share your design here, it will be easier to help you.  The one observation I'll make here is that Fusion's geometry kernel struggles when it is given "near tangent" edges to fillet.  So, the one recommendation I'd make is to go back to your sketch, and make sure that all the curves are constrained to be tangent if they are supposed to be.

1. Enable design history when starting with new design and change setting in the preferences.

I have edited the sketch so the're only 3 or 4 lines on the sides, however it still is unable to fillet the shape. Any other ideas?

as @g-andresen said, the first thing I would do is to enable design history in this design.  You definitely want to be able to edit the sketch and have the extrude, and any other downstream operations replay.  The fact that this design is not history-based, combined with the data I see in the sketch, makes me wonder if this was imported from a DXF or SVG, or otherwise authored in some other tool than Fusion.  And, that data looks pretty messy - lots of small curves that are not tangent.  Without digging in too deep, my educated guess is that the problem here is, indeed, the "near tangent edges" problem.  You can tell because when you select one edge, the selection does not chain to adjacent edges - Fusion will automatically chain to tangent edges if the Tangent Chain option is checked:

My recommendation is for you to trace these curves in a native Fusion sketch.  In the screencast below (with audio) I show how I would attack just this one part of the design.  But, there are lots of ways to do this.

I have tried retracing the lines using the spline function to make the formed object into 1 piece, so without any lines vertically. However, the fillet function still doesn't work. The project is fully made on fusion itself, it is not downloaded or opened in any other software or anything.

If you drew it in fusion, did you go back and delete all your constraints after?  Some how you managed to draw a cagillion tiny little connected arcs with out a single tangent constraint, which get added automatically.  Then you perfectly mirrored the bulk of it with out a mirror line or a mirror constraint, or any defined dimensions for that matter.  All the while you kept the coincident constraints.  I'm at a lost as to what your sketching workflow could have been to produce this.  Can you screen cast the process? it might be enlightening.

Haha yeah I am quite new to working with this kind of software. What I did was de following.

I found an image online of the Red Bull steering wheel. I've added this in as a canvas and used a combination of conic curves and three point arcs to outline the steering wheel. Because I wanted both sides the same I only did this for the left half of the steering wheel. Next I drew a sketch line through the centre of the wheel and mirrored this. I did delete alot of lines which I used to determine positions and the line throgh the centre of the wheel.

With this outline I wanted to extrude and shape (fillet) the individual parts.

I am so new to this that this forum entry is actually the first time I thought about constraints, so I did not use any

This is what I have been trying now.

I have tried re-sketching the handle bar using a spline.

After extrusion I am still not able to fillet the shape.

I'm sorry for being such a noob at this.

One thing you need to understand - Fillet is not a magic tool.  It will not succeed in all cases, even on native data.  The "near tangencies" are just one way that Fillet can fail.  There are plenty of other geometry that will limit what you can fillet.  Areas of high curvature, areas where the resulting blend surface will self-intersect, all can result in fillet failures.  Another useful tool to use is the Curvature Comb Analysis.  Select the edges that you want to fillet, and enable this analysis.  Areas of high curvature are shown as exaggerated lines in the curvature comb.  In your design, there are a couple of suspect areas:

These are very likely to cause Fillet problems along this edge.

 

Sometimes, you have to just go back into your sketch and tweak it until you start getting better results.  Even then, there will always be a limit to the radius that Fillet can achieve with a given set of geometry.

Also, another hint:  You are using way too many control points in your spline.  I edited your sketch, and removed over half of the control points.  It is always tempting to use more points when you are tracing over something, but actually, that instinct will work against you.  With that change, I can fillet the top edge to 1.3mm:

I have allready learned a lot from this, I appreciate this.

I'll play around with it for a while, hopefully I'll get it working.

In that case, please visit the Support & Learning section and go through the tutorials there.

Asking questions on the forum is fine and encouraged, but that should happen after absorbing at least some of the very basics. And those are part of these tutorials.
