Cannot Move Designs in A360

We are attempting to move some work from one project to another in A360.  A360 keeps giving an error saying, "Failed to move item: relationships exist on item".

Is there a way to move designs with referenced components?

Not currently. You can download the design from A360 as a Fusion Archive, it will carry the file extension .f3z. This removes the version history.

When this is uploaded, it re-creates the relationships in a new project folder.

Ok; that is what I thought.

Is there any plan to change this in the future?

Yes it will change.

Do you mind if I ask what your expectations are in this workflow? Just a couple of the things to consider:

  • What happens to models that are referenced in other designs after they are moved?
  • What happens when models reference designs in the original project?
  • Do you want to bring all versions? Comments?

Thanks,

My thoughts are below in green:

  • What happens to models that are referenced in other designs after they are moved?

When a design is moved, the user should be asked whether they want to move any designs that are referenced.  If so, all the associated designs are moved (keeping the same file structure).  If not, the "parent" design is moved and all links are broken (but the un-linked components are still present).

  • What happens when models reference designs in the original project?

If there is another design that references the one that is being moved, the above question should be asked regarding designs that are referencing the one being moved--with similar results.

  • Do you want to bring all versions? Comments?

It would be best to bring versions with the design being moved.

Some background: this has been an issue twice.  When we bring someone new on board, they are not always familiar with the way that Fusion saves things and our method of working with it.  We have everything in the same project.  Twice now (one of those times was me Smiley Wink ), when someone creates a design in their own project (rather than the parent one for the company), we have had issues getting the design moved over.  If we were working with Inventor or Solidworks, this would be as easy as moving files from one folder to another.  In Fusion, however, it is challenging to move designs from one project to another, and even more so if there are links within the designs.  I am really looking for a way to move designs from one project to another.  Ideally, we would not have this issue, but I do not think that is realistic.

I thought I would provide my feedback here as well.

I am trying to use the described feature to basically build up a 'library', for lack of a better word. So, I have project A, ProjectB, and LibraryA (just a project named library). In my library I have an assembly of a connector with a few screws and washers and nuts. I was hoping I could copy this into Project A and Project B.

I dont know if this is a wise workflow, so I appreciate your input. If this will be a possibility in the future, I would like it very much!

To answer your bullet points:

- I think just creating a copy in the new location would be useful for some applications, such as the one i described above. Really its about getting the components into the assembly, rather than having to add them one by one. I dont think there needs to be syncing between the copies?

- I think just the most up to date version is acceptable for this application.

Our current solution may be to create One main project, and just have everythign within this - however this defeats the utility of Fusions project structure so it would be unfortunate.

Thanks
Jeff
