Cannot modify STL / all black after import

Hi, I'm new and trying to modify a STL model from thingiverse, seehttps://www.dropbox.com/s/jiyy5p8fy3e89un/Raspberry_Pi_DIN_Rail_Clip.stl?dl=0  or http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:513633/#files (the forum doesn't let you attach stl files)

I'm using the upload command and then insert and it shows up like this. From what I understand i should also be able to import it as a mesh and use the sculpt commands which doesn't work either. If you could point me in the right direction, this would be great.

This is on OSX.

I've been having a similar issue. though I can work with the STL it's difficult/impossible to see the surface features as it's all one flat colour. I found that converting the STL to an OBJ before importing helps - not sure if there is a more eloquent solution as I'm new to this as well.

Simple at the feature tree just apply different material to the STL part. preferably something matte. I like to apply PEAK its a kind of cream plastic.
