Cannot delete ... - Where is it used?

Will Autodesk improve the routines regarding the "Cannot delete due to old references" when I want do delete objects?

I have moved back the history to before I used the objects but still, no way. Objects don't even have any information about it is being used, only the error message when I try to delete.

Would really like to know where it is used and look at what can be done to it. I have seen many posts regarding this problem but it seems Autodesk is to lazy to do something about it.

"Works as intended" is not a good enough answer in my opinion. Very defensive attitude.

I have made myself a folder with TRASH within my project to "clean up" non-used objects.

Apart from that Fusion 360 is a great product, cannot take that away but for me this problem is very annoying.

Are you trying to delete a component in a design or are you trying to delete a design from a project? If it's a design in a project you've used as a linked component in an assembly the only way to clear it from the assembly history is to use Save As and make a new copy of the assembly, then delete the old assembly then any unused linked designs. The new assembly with be at version 1 so there will be no way to roll back to previous version.

It is a design I copied from one project to another project (which became a copy). Then used it as linked component in a design. Since I was not satisfied I clicked back in the history until before I linked the component. Now in my opinion it is unused in the project and it  should be the simplest thing in the world to delete.

I will try to fix it the way you describe. But I have to say it is not very impressing from an else impressing software.

If you saved the file after linking the external design it is linked to the design history. The idea is lets say you link a part in V5 of your design then you delete it in V9 it's still linked to V5,6,7 and 8, if you need to roll back to one of those versions the file will be needed that's why you can't delete. It would be nice to have some way to remove history from a design but for now all you can do is what I described above.

Oh and if it bothers you so much put a request on the idea station.

I started to understand the connection between things here now and I still think Autodesk could simplify this a lot. In my opinion Autodesk could fix this easily.

I created a cube in d1, inserted it in d2, saved it and then deleted it from d2. d2 is now empty but there is a version v2 which contains a link to d1 and stops me from deleting d1.

A simple solution here is:

  • the errormessage should tell in which version design and version d1 is used, here version v2
  • in the versionlist it should possible  to delete the specified version. Unless they have linked each version to  the previous version which then would require to delete  all versions following the version we want to delete.  V2 can be promoted to v4 so I think that is not the case.

So if you have hundreds of version and the v84 is the problem that one could be deleted and all other versions could be kept. And the object we want to delete can be deleted.

I have components I made from STL files, most of which I never used in assembly, that I cannot delete.

It is incredibly infuriating.
