Can't find a surface to estrude

I suspect that flat-ish face at the center of your C shaped object isn't planer (perfectly flat), which is way you can't put a sketch on it.

But honestly, it's impossible to tell what your trying to do or ask from your video.  A few suggestions to make it easier to help you-

-some descriptive words of what your trying to do, or what you perceive the problem to be.

-a screen cast that is to the point.  an 8 minute screen cast of doing the same thing over and over isn't informative.  Short and sweet.

-attach your file

Am trying to extrude a circular depression for a bearing, but there is a
grid in between which does not allow me to reach the surface. I tried to
get rid of it by clicking on the symbol at the bottom of the page to no
avail. Also tried to put a plate on this surface without success.

Ahh.

-The "grid" was the grid for a sketch.  It's not something you delete.  It appears when ever a sketch is ACTIVE. Origin points are the dot at the center of the grid, and you don't delete those either, they are a part of the grid.

-One of the things that happened several times is you would start a sketch tool (such at "point", or "ellipse") and click on the screen somewhere.  It's important to understand what is going on here.  If you are not actively editing a sketch, then starting a sketch tool actually starts 2 commands.  The first is "create sketch."  The create sketch tool wants a plane as an input for the first click.  You kept picking the YX origin plane. Once a plane is selected then what ever tool you started can be used on the sketch you just created.

-You can actually accomplish the task you described by drawing on that plane by using the extrude tool.  I'll post a screen cast in a few min
