Can't edit imported DXF sketch

I imported some DXF files, but I can't edit the sketches that were created.  Edit doesn't show up in the menu when I right click on the sketch in the browser.  I'm using a Mac OSX 10.9.5.

I attached my Fusion file.  I also attached the zip file that has the dxf files.  I got them from this Instructables project:

You may need to break the link before it's editable.  There is a link icon in the Browser by the file name to click on.

It seems to be something to do with having Capture Design History on. If you open the DXF file rather than importing you can edit the sketch but as soon as you turn on Capture Design History the edit option disappears from the menu. I don't know if there's a reason it's working like this or if it's a bug.

That's strange, seems like a bug.  I can edit when I turn capture history off.  If I turn capture history on again, than I can't edit.

I thought it was a bug until I looked a little closer.

The imported DXF is always part of a Base Feature, and as such needs to be edited within the context of the base feature that contains it.

When you turn History off, the entire model becomes equal to a Base Feature, after all, Base Feature is just a DM node in your parametric history. So the behavior is the same.

Look for the Base Feature icon that represents the Sketch component and edit it. This does mean that DXF import is non-parametric and cannot be made to be parametric, for now. We are working on DXF insertion directly into designs which should provide the opportunity to add parametric dimensions.

Thanks!

I'm not following you:(  What is the base feature icon?  I assume it would be at the top (Knife Holder v5), but I don't see a way to edit the sketch from there.  I can turn off history from there and then right click on a sketch in the browser to edit it.

Here is a screenshot of my browser:

My apologies.

The DXF is currently considered a DM object, so the sketch is owned by the DM node. Hopefully this helps.

Thanks.  I would never have figured that out!

I'm having a lot of trouble with importing things.  I've got another similar problem.  I have a Fusion file that only has a sketch; history is turned off.  I imported some SVG text and it imported okay.  But I can't modify it in the SVG text in my sketch.  All the lines and points are green, and I think this means they are fixed, but I can't figure out how to unfix them.  I know sometimes you can select an item, right-click to unfix, but this doesn't work.  I can't even select the geometry.  File is attached.

@Phil.E can you put a note somewhere that imported DXF`s are not part of parametric drawing`s but they are base Feature`s at this time and you edit them as Base Feature`s inside the model if you have the time line on and you have to click and expand the Base Feature icon down the bottom to edit them I worked that out my self it was a very wasted week.

Import the file then window select everything in the sketch, right click on one of the lines or points should give you this menu.

Click on Fix\Unfix and you should be able to edit the sketch.

I tried that yesterday and it didn't work, but t worked just now.  I think I may have had only selecting bodies enabled.  Thanks.

@daniel_lyall

Thanks for the feedback, sorry you wasted some time. We are working on this from a few angles. You all will be pleased to know I've been testing insert of DXF directly to sketch. There's a few things left to work out, but it should make the cut for the next update. These will not be DM sketches.

We're also working on ways to make timeline more noticeable. We still find that people don't see the yellow and red warnings, or in your case you didn't notice the sketch you imported was part of a DM group. This is a longer term project, but we are trying to make the timeline a more effective tool for communicating your model information.

Thanks,

Phil.E, I'm a bit unclear on what DM actually is and how some objects are DM and some are not.  Can you elaboorate or point me to somewhere that explains this?

Thanks for asking.

This video explains it nicely:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYyPpkyo4rw

That video can be found on the Fusion 360 youtube channel. Check out all the videos there if you are curious about best practices, modeling techniques, etc.

If you need Help while you are using Fusion, you should try the ?Help button in the upper right hand corner. You can search the entire Fusion learning ecosystem: blog posts, forum posts, actual help pages, etc. There is a handy filter for narrowing down your searches too. This link shows a forum post that partially answers your question, and I think it's a little easier than searching the forum itself for answers like this.

Thanks!

thanks @Phil.E I have it all worked out now so all good, but if we can have import of DXF`s direct to sketch that will make me very happy, no more having to trace a DXF into a component then delete the DM sketch
