Can I use Fusion to clean up this 3d scan?

You used to be able to do this in meshmixer, and was told that most meshmixer functionality was being added to Fusion, so was wondering how in Fusion I could import this STL, and remove the crack and glue blob? Also how to scale STL to have correct size, as 3d scan is unitless.

Hi,

In theory you can clean this up in fusion. How successful you will be will

depend on a few factors but it appears you probably can. Import the STL

and simplify the number of triangles until you can convert it to a solid.

Then use various tools to clean it up.

Import the STL. Repair it so it is watertight. Simplify it if necessary. Convert

to a solid.

It should be straight forward to scale correctly. If you know the actual size

of the dimensions then measure them and then apply the appropriate scale

factor should do the trick.

I don't know if fusion would be the best tool here but I don't have sufficient

experience with Blender that is often suggested for working with meshes.

Give fusion a shot unless someone suggest a better solution.

Cheers

I would repair the original and rescan prior to importing the mesh. If that is not an option I would use form to recreate the base shape using the existing mesh as a guide and convert that to a solid.

What scanner are you using? Mine does not produce anywhere near that quality on parts like you are working with.

@autodesk

Set the desired Unit on Insert.

Autodesk MeshMixer is free and still available.

The macos version was pulled after not being updated since 2017. Also
autodesk announced in 2023 that no further development of meshmixer and
that features we going to be merged into Fusion.

Why does it need to be repaired?

What is your end goal with tis scan?

Repaired as in remove the crack and glue as seen in the picture so I can 3d
print a new one that looks perfect.

I think you are better off using software that works natively with meshes.

"Some" Meshmixer functionality has made it into Fusion. But by far not "most".

You could try the version that is still available on the web.archive.org. Should work under Rosetta even on the new Apple silicon, as reported in this Reddit thread.

For relatively simple geometry its often quicker and more accurate to just remodel it using the scan as a reference.

However to clean it up in MM select over the target area and go Edit>Erase & Fill.

Then probably a smoothing pass too.
