calculate the distance in rectangular pattern

Hi there,

I have posted some questions regarding my project, now after my final exams I have been resuming to my project and this is (I believe) the last problem I have.

The video describing my problem is here: https://screencast.autodesk.com/main/details/2b39b41d-63d3-4fa6-8f23-99c28ea65e43

I am trying to create a rectangular slab by using this "unit body" (I want all the spheres to touch each other with no gaps in between), however, when I use the rectangular pattern function, I do not seem to know how to calculate the distance. I wonder where it starts to calculate the distance as it does not seem to start from the center of the selected body. And when I tried to create the slab by dragging it, there are gaps between some spheres whereas there seem to be no gap between others. This is weird because the original unit body does not have any gaps among spheres.

Your help is much appreciated as always! Thank you all for your help all along!

Jason

@Anonymous,

Thank you for using Fusion 360.

Can you please share you model with us so that we can see what the issue may be.

each sphere is 40 micron in diameter and I need a slab with a length of 70mm, therefore I need 70 / (40*10^-3) = 1750 spheres. Obviously, my laptop gone crazy when I input this number. Does anyone have any insights on how to deal with this problem?

@Anonymous,

The issue starts with your original sketch.

Your sketch axis does not match your world axis:

Sketch axis not aligned to world.png

When you are selecting the direction in your pattern, you are selecting the world axis.

If you vertically constrain the top point of your hexagon to the origin and then make sure that all of the hexagon legs are the same length, this will correct this issue.

It will change the placement on the three circles.

By correcting your originating sketch I believe that the reset will fall into place.

Please try this and let us know.

Hello Bob and Jason,

Is there a limit on how small an object can be?

Zooming in on a 0.04mm sphere proves to be a challenge.

Hello Ludo,

Looking at the screen cast you provided I would say the video driver might be suspect considering the display issue. Can you try updating that if your on a PC?

Best Regards,

Hi there,

Thank you for all your help and discussion! I truly appreciate that. I do not have access to computer these days and I will try all your suggestions tomorrow.

Btw, did you guys have any suggestions on how to generate rectangular pattern of more than 6000 bodies as I mentioned on the second (or third?) thread?

Thank you again!
