Brep to T-Spline problem

mtriffon

I am trying to modify a model I imported.  I managed to do everything I needed except modify the legs themselves.  I did a Prep to T-Spline and got a result I don't understand.

I attached the before and after models.

Was this the best approach?  If not what do you recommend I do?

Thank you.

Flat surfaces wil alwaar only convert to a rectangular T-Spline.

You'll have to explain in more detail what it it you actually want to modify. My guess would be that T-Splines are not needed for this at all!

I need to move the legs apart to allow them to fit on a wider part and adjust their length.

And why would you need T-Splines to do that ?

In the geometry  in the file you attached I have a hard time finding what the actual legs are.

Please find a screenshot of the full assembly attached.  The legs are the tubes that go from the top to the bottom.

If T-Splines are the wrong strategy, how do I proceed?

Aha. Now all that makes a lot more sense.

Yes, you can do that with T-Splines, however I'd approach that very differently and not use any T-Spline conversion. I'll create screen cast later.

The flat, prismatic pieces I would simply leave in place and only the curved parts I'd re-create as a T-Spline.

I haven't gotten a response so I was wondering if anyone else can jump in?  My project is nearly complete and this is the last thing I need to resolve.

Thank you.

I created a screencast but due to unknown problems it is't uploading.

I basically hand modeled a T-Spline following the existing tubular structure. Then I made it a little wider. Hopefully  can take it from here.

Thank you for doing so much work on the model.  I am able to edit the form very easily but I still have no idea how to copy the face the way you did.  While I can easily modify the outside, I can't do the inside because that part was not modeled.

Did you manage to recover the screencast?  If not can you point me to a tutorial that shows me how to do what you did?

Again, thank you very much for your help.

I'd thought this would happen 😉

If you can give me a few days I will create a real tutorial - hopefully early next week  - how to reverse engineer this and make it "your own". This takes a litte longer as it goes beyond a normal 5 minute screencast 😉

Hi,

I just heavily edited my post and it might be easier (and less work for you) if you can point me to a tutorial that I can try to do on my own.  I feel like you went beyond support here and I feel guilty wasting your time.

If I can't figure out then I'll come back and ask for the screencast.  Would that be ok?

In the meantime, should I search Face to T-Spline?  What would be the appropriate terms?

Thanks!

I have no idea if such tutorial exists, because  I usually know what to do so I don't have a lot of need to watch tutorials 😉

But I bet a lot of people would like do such things and don't know how.

This should more interesting than version. 9,234,567 of "How to design an Knife Blade in Fusion 360".

What I'd need for you to do is to send that model with the correct fan in the correct location, and maybe a few photos of existing pieces an 3D printer so I can explain the problem and then develop one or more approaches how to solve it.

This would be a YouTube tutorial  on my mini channel 😉

Edit: Incude both Fans in that model.

Sorry about all the posts!

I removed the body and can now fully edit the form.  Would still love to understand how it's done so please find the full model attached.

You may (or may not) be proud of me, I created the last portion and need to merge the edges.  The problem I have is that symmetry errors keep coming up.  I also can't seem to merge the rear panel of the Fan mount to the main body.

What would be the best approach here?  Also, If I thicken or dimension the model I can't seem to merge edges.  Is this normal?

Model is attached.

Thank you!

I looked at last night at the design you had attached and noticed that most components are not properly lined up with the top level origin. Is that intentional ot is that just a lack of precision in your design ?

Also, the bracket that accepts the radial fan is designed with zero clearance. If you are3 going to 3D ring this fan duct, then you need some clearance. Would you agree ?

The origin thing is still murky to me so I am not sure what you mean..  I will try to find a tutorial on it.

I did not know how you modelled the T-Splines so I simply tried to re-create the top and use the join edge command.  I had some symmetry errors so I cleared symmetry but the results were not nice.  My best bet would have been to wait until I could see your screen cast showing how to model a face and simply use the old one, but I really need to complete this for our community of users.

I understand you are probably sick of this by now but if you could at lease give me or point me to a screencast that shows how you modelled a face from the original that would be great.

Thanks!

OH.

MY.

GOSH.

Peter you have just written the most severe understatement in the history of ever. You are speaking directly into my soul. I mean, I could model a knife blade in my sleep. But what if I want to model a fork for a change, huh? Where are all the fork tutorials?
