Beginner Modeling Help

I am trying to make an electric guitar. For now it is a relatively simple project in that I will only cut from the top of the stock.

The stock is about 1.5" thick and expensive wood, so I don't want to cut into it to make sure I have things setup correctly.  Instead I was hoping to use some inexpensive MDF that is only 3/4" thick to test the basic layout and pockets I have to make.

My plan is to:

1) Create parameter for material thickness (material_thick)

2) Create parameter for depth of various pockets (pocket_depth)

3) Then sketch the shape of the guitar on the xy plane with z=0

4) Push / Pull it up by an amount = material_thick

5) Create a sketch on the top surface of the body

6) sketch various grooves / holes etc that are required.

7) Push / Pull down into the body by an amount = pocket_depth

8) Run test cut in 3/4 in MDF to make sure i have layout right

Assuming I have it right, then I want to use the real material......which will require changing the thickness of material and depth of pockets.

This is the part I don't know how to do....any advice / suggestions would be very helpful

Thanks in advance!

Paul

Looks like you have it mostly worked out.

If pocket depth varies with material thickness, can you relate the two? Something like "pocket_depth=material_thickness - (some value)"?

Ok, this is sort of working now. Next problem, I drew the geometry for the grooves on the wrong sketch.....there seems to be no way to move it to another sketch, without using copy/paste which only sort of works.

When I copy / paste, it is in the wrong place and then moving the geometry is nearly impossible because the move command is essentially ignored.

Going to try again and see how it goes

It just doesn't work.

There are two grooves.....I put the geometry (using copy/paste) into a new sketch that is on the top surface.

Then I tried to push/pull one of the pockets....no problem - works great.

So I tried to push / pull the second pocket and it doesn't recognize the geometry as a closed shape so I can't push/pull it....and no idea why it is not closed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Very frustrating. I have a sketch with geometry drawn  but I can not select it when trying to push/pull.....but extrude seems to be able to select it....no idea why not or what could be wrong.

Any idea how I get support to help me understand what is worng with this file?  Happy to uploaad it but not sure how as I don't know how fushion 360 stores stuff.

After pasting your "grooves" in to another sketch, you can move it with triad manipulator or from point to point. One of "grooves" might not be closed because it wasn't closed on original sketch. It might missing coincident constraint between "lines". To find where, draw a line crossing "groove" in the middle, on of halfs will be filled, second will remain "empty". Now split the "empty" part... do that untill you know where gap is.

Hi @paul.hermans,

Would you be willing to share your design, or even a Screencast of what you are seeing?  It might help to debug your problems.

Also, there are quite a few Fusion users who are into guitar design (including myself).  Check out a couple of these posts:

good luck with your design!

Jeff,

Thanks for those cool links!  I am new to guitars, and am actually helping a few of my students who are into guitars build it....I know very little about guitars but that shouldn't matter too much yet.  Happy to share a screencast, and even the actual file if that is easier.  I am fighting with this, and while frustrated, see the potential to be great tool.  I have uploaded a screen cast shared here) but not really sure what I need to show to help diagnose the problem.

How do I upload the actual file?  Thanks

Paul

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried drawing additional lines, but even then it doesn't seem to recognize a region as you suggest.

I am certain I have done something foolish, but no idea what.  Will keep trying.

Thanks

I can bet that the problem is trivial, but I need your file to show how solve it.

How to post file? First ,in Fusion go to file menu and Export your design as .f3d (fusion native format). When you gonna anwser to my post, below text window there is attachments window.

Thank you for helping me figure this out!  I am sure it is something small that I did wrong, but no idea what.

One note, you may see that there is a copy of the various grooves on the original sketch....i have those there just in case, but in the end I will delete them and only use the ones on the top of the  body.

I think I understand what happened.  Somehow the "show profiles" for that sketch got turned off.  So, all you should have to do is turn it back on.  I also noticed that another of your sketches has a warning - it has lost the plane it was defined on.  It looks like you don't need this sketch, so I would delete it.  But, if you do need it, you can redefine the sketch plane.  I couldn't find a suitable plane, but I can show you how to do that if you need to keep this sketch.

Here is a screencast showing how to turn the profiles back on, which is all you need to be able to use your "Top_Grooves" sketch.

Jeff,

Thank you so much!!! That is exactly what happened.  I am learning by the seat of my pants, and didn't connect the idea of a "profile" with what I was seeing.

I am back on the way.

You are right, I was messing with a construction plane, and deleted it.....and I won't need the sketch that was attached to it.

Thanks again....you're a life saver!

Paul
