Beginner engraving problems

Hi. My first project is to engrave a simple design into the top of a small aluminium enclosure.

I have followed Terry Jones video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVodMJT7v_8.

My design includes circles, lines and shx text, all of which should engrave at the same depth/width using an engraving bit. My hope is to learn, avoid disaster, and manually sneak up on the result by engraving multiple very shallow passes.

When I simulate the engraving, only my circles get cut, at what seems like the full plunge of the bit. The lines and text appear to be excluded from the simulation altogether, despite being selected along with the circles when I created the engraving. I suspect somehow the circles have a dimension to them but the lines and text remain theoretical, however I don't know how to check or correct this?

Think you're using the wrong toolpath, Engrave is for V caving between 2 edges or curves. I think you will want to use Trace or 2d Contour with compensation set to Off. Can you make up a sample file you can share on the forum, just export as a f3d with your cam setup and tools.
