baffled by import image

I've been playing around importing images so they can be traced. I'm confused at what ends up getting imported.

See attached picture. When I import an image, I get a "squished" version of it, the aspect ratio is not maintained from the original image.

However, if I try to scale it by doing the aspect ratio math (in this case 2016/1512 = 1.333), the image does not go back to what it should be. The scale actually needs to be more like 1.6. What am I missing here? Why doesn't it not maintain the original aspect ratio?

Also, is there any plans to add ability to import eps files or such that will get the tracing done automatically?

Thanks.

Distorted and original attached.

That looks clearly like a bug to me!

The metadata on the original image shows Orientation : 6 (rotated 90 CCW)

I simply re-exported it as a jpeg and then the metadata shows :

Then it imports with the correct aspect ratio.

I have attached the  corrected file.

Good catch @TrippyLighting!!!!

Hmm... a problem with ios 9? I took that picture with the iphone and then emailed it to myself. Maybe i had it tilted a little wierd? it does show correctly

on the phone though.

I've noticed some wierdness with auto-rotate lately on the phone (videos, images, etc).

Maybe, but this is definitely a bug as Fusion 360 seems to ignore the metadata.

I've posted  second thread, so this does not get overloked 😉

Thanks for posting this, @fritter63, and nice investigation work @TrippyLighting!

You're right, it appears we're not handling the metadata correctly for this image. I've logged this with our development team to investigate (issue no. FUS-21916, if needed for future reference).

In the meantime, rotating the image before inserting into Fusion, as @TrippyLighting suggests, is probably the best workaround.

Apologies for the inconvenience this causes,

Jake

@TrippyLighting Sorry, this hasn't been fixed yet I'm afraid 😞 We're looking into it.

Thanks,

Jake

Hi Jake - any chance you can fix this bug ?  It's been 5 years so far ...

Yes - there are 2 bugs with images:

a) Fusion360 screws up the way it processes the image EXIF metadata (rotation/aspect data) and "squishes" your images

b) When you try to scale it, the scale operations are immediately applied *before* you accept them, so unless you got the fix 100% perfect on your first attempt, anything you tried first will always be making things worse.

I'm not sure how these two VERY simple bugs have managed to evade being fixed for so long !

Is there a work-around for importing an image? When I used fusion on a Windows computer I didn't notice this problem, only on mac.

@bbrendon I described a workaround in the 2nd post.

Not that this bug comes up that often, but it is embarrassing that this still hasn't been fixed!

Somehow it wasn't a problem for some period of time, but now I have the same problem.
Photo was took on Android and downloaded from Google photo on mac.

Solution:
1) Open picture in mac preview
2) shift + command + 4
3) select area to make screenshot
4) upload screenshot to fusion

It’s been so long that I not only forgot about the OP, I even forgot about posting that I had forgotten about the OP!

Autodesk needs some DOGEing I think. 😎
