I just tried and Published locally with Fusion 360 Animation.

1. Is there a way to added for example a floor?

2. Is there a way to render this with color locally and/or in the A360 Cloud?

Hey @kevinwatts,

Thanks so much for posting your questions - Here's some comments to your questions about Animations in Fusion 360...

1. Is there a way to added for example a floor?

To create a floor, you'd have to model a floor in the Model workspace. Alternatively, you could also turn on the ground shadows option which may get you what you're looking for. Out of curiosity, do you have an example of the type of scene or sample animation you're looking to get out of Fusion?

2. Is there a way to render this with color locally and/or in the A360 Cloud?

We have a Publish to Video option from the ribbon in the Animation workspace. Click the "Publish" command, and set some parameters to get a video saved locally to your machine. This will publish out a video with the same rendering fidelity that you see in the Animation workspace when you play back the animation. As far as being able to publish out a video utilizing the online rendering-as-a-service (A360 workflows), we don't yet have that hooked up. This is on our roadmap, however, and we will be working on this feature set soon.

Again, if you have any additional detail that you can give or samples of the kinds of animations you need to create that would be great for us to see to better understand your workflow and requirements.

Thanks in advance,

Timera

Hi Timera,

I appreciate your follow up. It would take a lot of resouces to render full colour with reflections like we do in Maya. Still the current local rendering does provide a fast and easy way to present additional information that can not be conveyed in a still.

Due to the confidential nature of the project at hand, I can not distrbuite a copy. I will need to edit the animation that I am working on. I found that editing motion is not intuative. Perhaps there is a way to better control start/stop position  and inbetween. Also, the camera wants to zoom automatically when you need to move around to grab a component to move.

One thing that I was not sure how to overcome was the rotation on an axis. It works easlity to rotate on the center axis of the design. I have another cylindrical component (could also say screws) that also needs to be rotated. It seems to rotate on the axis which is not related to the center of the body but rather another axis. Any ideas on how to handle that type of rotation would be great!

Regards,

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the additional detail, I think I can help out here on several of the items. The Animations tools aren't meant as a traditional M&E animation tool, so you're right that you're not going to get Maya-like animations, but it sounds like you're finding what you need here which is good. Here's a few more tips & tricks that you might find useful.

To have more control over the start/stop times of a transform, right-click on the transform action in the timeline and choose Edit Start/End. This will open a mini-dialog box where you can be precise up to 2 decimal points on any given action.

To navigate the scene without "recording" the camera, simply toggle off the camera from the ribbon. This comes in super handy for the use-case you described below. As soon as you toggle the camera recording back on, your view will reset to the last recorded position and you won't have to hassle with akward camera actions on your timeline.

To address your question about rotating along a non-normal axis, I've shot a quick video showing a sample of what I'm interpretting you're trying to do hereBasically, you can use the reorient tool on the Transform dialog to manually move/reorient the triad free in space, or snap it to another component. Also note that for the next release coming out in a couple weeks that we have made some enhancements to this feature which will make it more intuitive and powerful.

I hope this is helpful, please let me know your thoughts! I'd be happy to hop on a gotomeeting with you and walk you through some best practices, as well as get to know your workflow better. If you're interested, let's get something on the calendar!

Best,

Timera

Thank you Timera,

We had a local power out yesterday that has put me behind. I will try what you have explained and post back.

1. I also need to bring the final AVI in to PowerPoint. I Published a test in "full screen." It imported but the image is not as clear as I would like. Granted I am rendering locally, is there a render ("Publish") preset would you recomend that I try.

2. I like the idea of generating an exploded view. Is there a way to capture a still image at a frame along the timeline?

I will try to get the animation closer to completion and if needed will be delighted to have your guidance to improve the results.

Best regards,

Kevin

Hey Timera,

Ok, I got the rotation to work. Much appreciated! For others reading this post, I found that  selecting the correct component and clicking the check-mark after, are important.

In addition to the last two questions:

3. After an animation is created, is it possble to add a few seconds to the begining and end of the timeline using the matching view?

4. Is there a way to add text? Like a begining and ending title. I think Callouts would require action on the part of the user to show. I would just like to add a simple title.

Best regards,

Kevin

Hi Timera,

Please see the 4 questions in my last two posts from Friday. Thank you.

I was able to grab a still from an animation after through the MS AVI viewer.

Best regards,

Kevin

Good morning Kevin,

Great questions! I've added my responses in-line below in blue for clarity.

1. I also need to bring the final AVI in to PowerPoint. I Published a test in "full screen." It imported but the image is not as clear as I would like. Granted I am rendering locally, is there a render ("Publish") preset would you recomend that I try. Have you tried changing the resolution in the Publish dialog? 1920 x 1080 is currently the highest resolution that we're able to publish out right now, because we are using local compute to perform this operation. When we get the Animation workspace hooked up to RaaS (using cloud compute), we'll have much more control over resolution, but in all transparency that's still several months away.

2. I like the idea of generating an exploded view. Is there a way to capture a still image at a frame along the timeline?

Exploded View support is not an "official" workflow yet - although we are currently working on it. In the meantime, you can use a simple workaround to get a basic view from anywhere on the timeline. Drag the playhead to the desired location on the timeline for the view you want, then from the File dropdown menu, select Capture Image. This will save a full-screen image of the model at that point in time and save it locally to your drive.

3. After an animation is created, is it possble to add a few seconds to the begining and end of the timeline using the matching view?

I'm not sure I understand your question, can you explain what you mean by "matching view"?

4. Is there a way to add text? Like a begining and ending title. I think Callouts would require action on the part of the user to show. I would just like to add a simple title.

You are right, Callouts require some interaction from the user to expand and show the text. We don't currently have any way in-canvas to show any text, but this is something I'd like to hear more about. Are you hoping to have the text show up inside the viewer? You can, however, change the title of the Storyboards, and they will permeate through the viewer as the title for the animation in the navigation menu. Double-click on a Storboard tab to change it's name.

Be sure to let me know how this all goes for you, and I'm looking forward to setting up some more time to chat with you.

Best,

Timera

Hi Timera,

I am using the suggestions that you have offered. "Double Click" to edit the Storyboard Title was a great help to keep organized. Today, I am trying to exploding the components.

Q3 - How to  add a few seconds to the beginning and end of the timeline? "Matching" I simply want to add a leader without adjusting the camera.

Q4 - Titling - often that is considered a post edit job. But to correctly since the camera scales and movement it would be nice.

Q(new) Exploding Components - Is there a way to edit the exploding values after committed? Sequence and timing can be controlled on through the Timeline. However, the ability to modify the direction and distance each component will travel would be a great improvement.

Kevin

P.S. Note for others reading this thread: Before creating animations, make sure that you convert each item that you want to control through the Animation mode into a Component  and before Joints are applied.

Hey Kevin,

I'm glad the suggestions are proving helpful for you! Here's some more...

Q3 - How to  add a few seconds to the beginning and end of the timeline? "Matching" I simply want to add a leader without adjusting the camera.

Thanks for clarifying this for me. We don't have any way of doing this today, but I think this could be useful. I will add it to our backlog and we will look at it for a future release.

Q4 - Titling - often that is considered a post edit job. But to correctly since the camera scales and movement it would be nice.

We have looked at this before, but we didn't find a great solution for how to best provide this functionality yet. I'll capture your request, and take it back to the team to see if we can revisit this.

Q(new) Exploding Components - Is there a way to edit the exploding values after committed? Sequence and timing can be controlled on through the Timeline. However, the ability to modify the direction and distance each component will travel would be a great improvement. Not yet - but this is also an enhancement that the team is working on for the July release. We will be adding an "edit action" feature to the right-click menu of an action on the timeline that will allow you to edit the distance and axis of movements and rotations of actions, which will be really powerful. So, in the meantime, you'll have to delete and re-create actions with the desired distance/direction, but know that this is something that is coming soon!

Thanks again for all this great feedback, and please keep the comments/questions coming!

Best,

Timera

Hi,

How can one adjust light in the animation Environment? I am asking because a material l will only have its natural appearance when in rendering environment . This I think is due to the light effect.

Please help.

Hello Tajudeen,

Sorry not to reply faster.

Yes, you are correct. The lighting is very important to achieving a photo realistic rendering. There have been improvements when rendering still 3D objects. They also look better when enlarged or in contrast with a sharp contrasting background color. I was showing some of my work in the USA and the company there thought that the renderings were real photos.

I have not had a chance to do animations recently. Best to try to achieve what you can. My animations were not photo realistic which would have been very very impressive! However, it was the only way for me to convey important information visually for servicing and manufacturing. Refer to C comments in the link below:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fusion-360-design-validate/how-to-render-animation/m-p/7449105#M13659...

Let's keep pushing to have animation rendering improved. Photo realistic renderings would make a very very impressive presentation!!

Regards,

Kevin
