Aligning a drawing view to the component face not the design axis

Hello,

When creating drawings of a tubular framework I need to orientate the individual components to a face or along the tubes axis to make proper orthographic views, but when you make a drawing of the component it displays it in the drawing window along the axis it was create in the design window.

Can you orientate a component/part to a face, sketch, or geometry axis/feature, without using the drawing rotate function, so that one can create proper orthographic views in relation to component geometry with greater speed and accuracy, than noting the design angles and then rotating.

Cheers,

Phil

What you have to do is create a Named View. First select a face and select look at to get the correct orientation then right click Named Views in the browser and create a view. When you go to the drawing workspace select the new view, don't forget to save the model first.

Hi, I also have components and assemblies that are tilted in the design space but I want their axes to align vertically or horizontally in the drawings.  I found your article here and tried it.   In the design space I found the component and applied "look at" on the face of the components I want and then created named views.  Then I created the drawings.  The projections come out on the drawings tilted like they are in the design but then I struggled for some time figuring out how change to a new named view as they do not appear in the drawing space browser like they do in the design space browser.  And I was preparing this reply to ask you how do do that last step - but I just figured out how to do it.  Rather than now deleting this I thought I'd add that detail:    On the drawing, click on the primary projection > Right click on it and then click edit view  > In the dialog under Appearance, click the Orientation drop down and select the named view. Presto!!

Just a picture to make clear. When you create the base view, or double click an existing base view you set the orientation on the Drawing View dialog.
