3D sketch issues

I am trying to make a part that has to about 20mm shell (open on one side) and has a bend.

  I am attempting to use 3D sketch but having difficulty getting the sketch to 'close'. 

if I do a really rough one (not going where it really needs to go) I have no trouble. 

I assume I am still not connecting a couple lines (ones that go into a different plane)- but cannot seem to make it work

 

please look at this sketch and help me with the issues.

Hi

The sketches are missing many constraints.

Go back to the first sketch and make sure it's rigid.

Then apply all necessary constraints to the second sketch; remember to create repeating elements through projection, not drawing.

As a general rule, you should not finish working on a sketch until the padlock icon appears next to it in your browser.

if by "close" you mean have a light blue profile, then the problem is you only get that with sketches that are planer.  you're not going to get it with a 3d sketch.

 

most likely, a 3d sketch isn't the way to go here.  what were your next steps going to be?  the only tool that might work with this sketch would be a surface patch, and it is going to be a warped mess, and not likely the nice part your envisioning.

 

can you give us some info on what your trying to do?  such as a pic or something?

here is what I'm trying to make. I could get the basic shape pretty close using 'sheet metal' - but of course the fillets etc didn't work. 

  I goofed up bending this one- but it does fit well. I would like to try and do it (with support) the proper shape- plus there will be other times I want to do this and I don't have a good idea on how. 

 if I could just bend bodies, it would be easy.

well, after reading responses, and thinking some more. I did a different method. 

 I changed the 'main' extrude to more that I wanted in the end. Then made a plane on the angle and location I wanted- split the body and removed the part I didn't want. 
then I could hollow it out. still working in it, but looks much more that I want. 

 

still like to hear other methods.

Based off your sketches,

Lofted the lower black lines.

I extended the larger panel and Lofted to the first body, trimmed off the excess.

Added a constant Fillet but can be a variable Fillet if that helps.

 

Pic shows the back lines might have an S bend ??, can't tell.

If it were me, I would sketch on these 2 planes so the single loft could be achieved between them.

Hi Mark,

 

Instead of creating the whole model in one operation, I create patch surfaces on individual 2D profiles. Next, stitch the surfaces into a new surface body. Add fillets. Thicken the surface to the desirable thickness and convert it to a Sheet Metal body. The Flat Pattern can be created too.

I do not know how to do most of those - but it would be a good learning opportunity.
