Yep, I know this has been reported a number of times including by your's sincerely.
It is tiring and frustrating having to do this over and over again!
I was trying to use a dimension (d3, the diameter of the pipe feature) as a parameter in the joint origin dialogue so it would always be in the correct spot when that diameter changed. No such luck. the dialogue only converts the parameters into a numerical value when placed into the floating fields.
Wen placed into the UI window files that also has to be done twice.
Can I get this to work ? Of course.
How do I explain this to an excited Fusion 360 newcomer ?
This is not rocket science!

Can you clarify this as a screencast?
From what I understood, I wasn't able to reproduce. d1 worked as an entry in the modeling window for me.
Cheers,
Karina
@TrippyLighting , I was all set to believe you, because I know that there are still places in Fusion where the equation is not captured. So, I found the original bugs on this (FUS-21005 and a duplicate FUS-30219), which reference forum thread litte-joint-origin-ui-bug. But, those bugs have been marked closed as of Dec 2018. So, I just tried this out for Joint Origin, and it seems to be working OK. So, maybe your workflow is a bit different than mine, if so, a screencast would help.
For a moment I thought I am starting to loose my mind but I did a bit more diggin'
Edit the joint origin and you shall see (insert evil laughter).
Ah, OK, Edit Joint Origin. Got it. Bug is filed as FUS-47947
follow-up: This bug has now been fixed in the current production build
