Shortcuts for Model View Cube

Shortcuts for Model View Cube

I'm not too fond of being limited to the cube to change model views, as well as the animation that is slow to change views.

Solidworks has Ctrl+1/2/3/4/5/6/7 as default to change views, and a slider to quickly change the model view or even turn it off.  Mouse gestures to do this would help as well.

Hey Brian, thank you for reaching out. Below are the Fusion 360 mouse navigation combinations:

You can also find more shortcut keys here: http://fusion360.autodesk.com/learning/learning.html?guid=GUID-2614BC97-FECB-4C0D-B34B-2EBD3FABDA9A

Thank you for the response.

I was looking more for shortcuts for specific views (front, back, top, bottom, left, right) using shortcuts or mouse gestures.

+1 for shortcut keys to specific views. I was one of the people who originally suggested shortcut keys, and instead of getting shortcuts to view -- which is what I really had in mind -- we got shortcuts to commands -- useful, but not as useful as shortcuts to view.

@keqingsong, please think about this. Thanks!

Also, left/right/up/down arrow keys should rotate the view cube from whatever positon it's currently in to an adjacent view.

More comments are requested to explain the usefulness for keyshort cuts to swicth to different views like front top side back?

Thanks, @cekuhnen, for asking for clarification. Before I answer your question, I think I should preface two points that may not be clear to your development team.

1) A "keystroke" doesn't always happen on the keyboard! Many of us have mice that have extra keys that allow you to assign a keystroke to the extra key. For example, Logitech mice do this. Therefore, when we're asking for hotkeys, we're asking for two things: a) hotkeys on the keyboard, as you'd expect, and also b) a way assign common tasks to the spare keys on the mouse.

2) People are inconsistent. Sometimes the fastest way to work is with the mouse. But sometimes, you're leaning back in your chair as you think about your model, and the keyboard is more handy to look at the next view.

Now, with this, I think it's easy to understand the usefulness of keyboard shortcuts to various views. First of all, they're a way of assigning a view to a spare key on the mouse. Second, if your hand isn't on the mouse, it's often faster to hit "up" than to slide the mouse to the little arrow about the view cube.

Therefore, the most important shortcut to add is an "obit" command that does not use the traditional mouse buttons (i.e. left, right, center). Like ctrl+O. Therefore, you can assign a spare key on your mouse to orbit.

Does this clarify it, @cekuhnen?

Yes - totally agree - you NEED to have buttons assigned to quickly change views - I am so used to having them assigned to the numeric keypad on a certain 3D app I use, this works great in singe window modelling yes yes yes need need need !!!

This is a good idea and is captured in our backlog, but isn't a priority at the moment.  We're tracking this internally as FUS-21098.

Thanks,

Charles

Coming from Solidworks this is a non-obvious but critical option for me. Pressing the spacebar in Solidworks brings up the View box right where your cursor is. While you can always pivot to SORT OF the view you want, I'm always designing products where I want fast direct access to exact view like Front, Top and Right. Constantly moving my cursor to the top right to access views is just a waste of time and a hassle. Time saved by having this feature would really add up for me and I suspect others posting.

Ive been using Fusion on Mac and I really like to have full and fluid control when modelling and viewing models, so I was a bit disappointed that multitouch support on the magic pad was not support - however - with a wacom graphics tablet I solved the problem but creating a custom setting in the Wacom Driver on the system prefs for pretty much controlling the view ports with just the stylus :

If you map the following in this fashion :

Stylus Top Button : Right Click

Stylus Bottom Button : Middle Click

Stylus Tip : Click

then you can use a combination of keyboard shortcuts to control the whole view port with the stylus like so :

SHIFT + Control + Stylus Movement = Zoom +/-

SHIFT + Stylus Movement = Rotate View

OPTION + Stylus Movement = Dolly / Pan

In this way you can work on the models and drawings in a smooth manner and have the menu on tap with the middle click button, ideally it would be great with multitouch, but with this workflow you are pretty much controlling all of this on one hand with the stylus which makes it even faster than multitouch, now if the view ports were mapped to the numeric keys for orthogonal views eg. 2 for top, 4 for left, 5, for right, 7 for down, etc. etc. this would be most ideal as you wouldn't have to use the view cube and could click through the views on the numeric pad and then break away from the view with the stylus method as above for inspection in free view being controlled with the stylus + keyboard method - try it !

This should be a priority! After all these years that was supposed to be in the alpha. I understand that devs/product managers have a different design philosophy but not on the expense of usability or my time. Thanks!

Its pretty unbelievable that we still have to mouse over to the viewcube and click one the sides in order to get into the orthographic views. It slows down a workflow immensely.

Please just give us 6 keys to go to the top, front, left, right, back and bottom!

For the love of god please implement shortcuts to named views already. I work on a widescreen monitor and it is exhausting continually having to go to one arbitrary corner for Front or Right and then it doesn't even zoom to capture the whole object.

Not only is it irritating to have to travel to a far corner for both mouse and actually turning my head, the hitboxes on the views and selecting which one you want are too small and easy to misclick. This is a neat interface idea with POOR execution in terms of usability. Not saying you have to copy someone's solution like Solidworks where the views pop up instantly on Spacebar, but you don't need to reinvent the wheel.

A good interface design gets out of the way so you can do the work. This is literally going out of the way (to a far corner) to make it harder.

While via the mouse we have basic navigation the UI does not offer a fast and fluid way to switch to a specific view.

Ortho Top, Front etc is not possible

Rotate the view along the view axis is not possible

For all this the view cube has to be used.

So I fully agree on your comment considering that this initial idea post is from "10-22-2015".

We have 2017 now.

Blender 3D does not have a view cube but you can navigate via the usual mouse commands

and to snap to a specific view you can hold CRTL while rotating and this then snaps to 45 degree increments.

Thats pretty amazing. This is maybe something Fusion should include as an idea!

Literally any implementation is better than the view cube. This is like trying to play a first person shooter but every time you want to go in a direction you have to click on a cube in the corner.

3DConnexion SpaceMouse (Pro & Enterprise) have ortho, iso, custom, rotate, etc. views among their shortcut buttons.

The compact SpaceMouse Notebook right button pops a radial menu, handy for view selection.

Pretty sure you can connect std. views to the extra buttons on some CAD/gaming mice.

It does seem rather basic, but I see no easy way to map a view shortcut to the keyboard. Especially when 3rd party vendors have many short cut options in their devices.

I checked the Fusion 360 App Store for Add-Ins / Scripts, but don't see anything.

I searched the Fusion 360 API Object Model, but don't see any commands that might work.

Hope that helps, Ken

Fusion,

It's been OVER a year, why hasn't this become a thing yet? This is standard in ALL professional 3D Modeling programs.

I am struggling with wasted time pushing the home button on the cube, hundreds of times in the item I am creating.  It would be so beneficial to have this request implemented.
