Prioritize sketch geometry in sketch mode

Prioritize sketch geometry in sketch mode

Hi,

It would be great if when you are in sketch mode, that selection will prioritize the geometry of that specific sketch.

As it works now, if you have 3D-geometry "above" your sketch plane, F360 will select features of the 3D geometry rather than what you are sketching. You will need to long-click in order to manipulate your sketch lines, use the slice option or turn the light off on the body. Often times when I design something, I want to adjust my sketch depending on the 3D, which means a lot of switching on/off the slice or bodies light bulb.

Additionally, I don't know if I'm doing it wrong, but I cannot double-click dimensions to edit them if they are underneath the 3D-model. It seems you need to activate the dimension tool to do it (or hide the 3D-model).

to add to that, allow a toggle function to turn of linking to solid geometry so that you're only working within the sketch when you want to be.

For the record, there is a tool to deal with that. In the browser, right-click the sketch you're working in and select "slice sketch." it will create a cross-section at the sketch and you will be able to select your sketch geometry as you would expect.

@Anonymous :

Absolutely, and I acknowledged it in the original idea formulation.

But the gist of my proposal is to make it the default behavior to first and foremost select and manipulate sketch elements rather than the 3D geometry superimposed on the sketch plane.

I find it very frustrating having to turn the slice on and off all the time, because I want to see the 3D geometry and also want to move my 2D sketch elements about while I see where it end up in relation to that 3D.

I agree with this idea.  Its great to be able to select 3d geometry, "above"  the sketch for the purpose of projecting geometry and so forth,  but not at the expense of the geometry being created within the active sketch.

For instance, I project some lines on my sketch by selecting the geometry "above" the sketch plane.   Then I drop a circle on the sketch plane, but the circle is underneath 3d geometry.  Now I can't select the circle I just added to dimension it etc.

selection priority should always go to the active item.   By rotating the model, slightly, you would still be able to select any 3d geometry "above" the active sketch plane.

its a royal pain to have to section the model or use the slice sketch if you want to select the active geometry.

Thanks!

Hi @jkelindberg,

We agree! This is currently being worked on and should be coming in an update soon.

There are now new sketch specific selection filters that allows you to overcome this issue: http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/blog/january-19-2017-update-whats-new/

Great. But this was not how I hoped this feature would work. The original idea was to have F360 turn this on when entering sketch mode and turn it off when you leave sketch mode. So really, this is no better than how it worked previously, only difference is I have to do a lot of menu selections instead of hiding/showing the 3D-model... In fact, it is even more work using this new filter feature. When I enter sketch mode, I want to manipulate my sketch unobstructed by 3D-models. At least for me, this new feature is not going to be used, it just takes too much time to turn it on/off to be useful.

Hi @jkelindberg,

I see your predicament. We are taking some steps to improve this experience. The first is the one that Keqing has outlined in the "What's New."

To clear things up, there is some additional functionality that has been added in the Sketch environment. We are automatically toggling these filters while you in the sketch environment during window selection as you can see in the video below. Now when you window select in the sketch Environment we will only select sketch geometry.

Try it out and let us know what you think!

@maritza.ga

I'm not quite sure what that video is trying to show me, to be honest.

Anyway, I noticed that the selection filter "Select through" is sort of similar to the original idea I posted, so I'm happy with this.

Thanks!

Hi @jkelindberg,

Glad you found your solution! The window selection improvement has made it so that only sketch elements in the active sketch are selected. Previously, window selection would include 3D geometry and other sketch elements.

Thanks for your feedback.
