Include STL in File>Export

Include STL in File>Export

Pretty self explanatory.

Currently it's hard to find how to save as STL. Going to the tree menu doesn't feel intuitive. It feels more natural to look for it under "Save As" or "Export"... and since you have other formats under Export (IGES, STEP, etc.) it makes sense to include it here.

I don't usually mess with "sculpting" in Fusion but, today I noticed they do the same thing with OBJ files when in sculpt mode. Curious what the thinking behind this is. I'm sure there is a logic to it, like DXF export only in sketch mode. +vote

Great point about OBJ, @mfeathers! It would definitely be nice to have a consistent organization for different formats.

In the context of CAM, are you talking about saving a STL of the simulated stock?

If so, what is the workflow?

For the workflow of using Simulated stock as the stock for the next setup we are working on a solution that does not require you to save the stock as an STL.

@al.whatmough

I'm attaching an image of the current location for "Save as STL" or "Save Control Frame as OBJ" (in Model and Sculpt, respectively), which are under the menu tree in the left side of the workspace. This location is not easy to find and many people have a hard time knowing where it is. I know that the first time that I had to save a model as STL (for 3D printing) I spent over 30 minutes trying to find the option in all the menus, then I started to wonder if Fusion360 was actually able to save STL's and eventually went to the discussion forums where I found a thread that explained where to find it.

Most programs put format options under "Save as" or "Export". My proposal is to remove Save As STL/OBJ from under the menu tree and to include them as format options in "Export".

I I see

As this is in the sculpt envoirnment, I will have my collegue address your question.

I am "just" a CAM guy.

Status changed to: Future Consideration

I agree that this could have been organized better but as I recall there was some discussion around exporting the entire model as an STL vs. on a body by body basis because doing the body by body gives you better control over the tessellation of the parts rather than having all the parts be one type of tessellation level.

Having said that you can export from the cloud and all the files will be converted to an STL file, so I'm not sure about the logic. Seems like we could add STL to the export options.

Thank you, @colin.smith. This makes sense when you explain it but I'm not sure if users get this logic when saving the file. It seems to me that people would rather see one single window where they can select which bodies to export (as well as 'all bodies') instead of looking for the right place in the menu structure.
