Compnent based CAM

Compnent based CAM

In an assembly or model with multiple components it's a massive PITA needing to hide and unhide components for various machining processes. Then when you go back to an old process you need to do it all over again.

It would be much easier if you could choose to make a CAM setup based off everything or if you could create a setup for a single component. This way when you are in the component specific machining op only the operation, setups and toolpaths for that specific component are visible and unless specifically selected otherwise only that component is visible.

I suspect that when Fusion team offers the ability to do merging and whatnot in documents this will require them to have a more traditional component > assembly relationship. When this happens, I think it will be easier to have your components as separate files, and then as separate CAM processes.

This is all speculation, by the way.

I, too, dislike the way CAM works on parts in place. I find it can be made easier by using the "Isolate" command you get from right clicking on the component in the browser.

What I really want to see is a way to lay out your flats and nest them. I don't need automatic nesting right now, just easy nesting.

Very good point lukepighetti. I would much rather have the components in their own individual part files from which I could machine them so I guess this would be my second but much less prefered choice.

The IDEAL situation would be if Fusion had something like configurations in Solidworks, where you can create different versions of parts and assemblies where features, and parts can be suppressed or unsuppressed depending on what you want to see.  Then the CAM operations in Fusion could also be tied to these configurations.  Currently even the Solidworks version of AD-CAM doesn't support this, but I suspect it will in the future (someday).

Putting all your CAM stuff in a separate assembly that is linked to outside part files is the preferred workflow for Solidworks and I believe Inventor also.  It works pretty well and makes it easy to update the CAM stuff if a part file changes.

Well I like how Fusion have all the components in a single file right now but I get it that when it comes to machinings, drawings and copy/paste the file into a new project/assembly it'll be a hassle. I've actually created a long thread about it awhile back, so if you guys feel like it. Feel free to response in it.

As Fusion gets more advance and feature added. It'll be great to have some form of control or overview on what files is in the project and perferrably in a modern method, rather then having to manually manage a bunch list of individual components in the data panel.

My workaround right now is to make a new design that imports the fully component model,  Then I make a stock box for each component and within the cam I use each of those stock box's as the new model coordinates for cam.  This works pretty well, except for the fact nothing is nested.
