Center of Mass Highlighting

Center of Mass Highlighting

My suggestion is simple: When clicking properties on a component in an assembly, there is a very helpful center of mass number. However, the number's themselves aren't always easy to discern, especially if the component isn't at the origin. So I suggest making an option (much like the XYZ Delta feature in "Measure".) that highlights and displays the center of mass so we can locate it visually. Maybe a big green dot, or like XYZ Delta, coordinate lines.
Thanks, I hope you guys like it.

Center of mass should be there as a point like an origin.

Also, non-degenerate principal axes should be there as directions, and 2-D degenerate ones as planes (like an origin, but not fully populated)

Something like this but with the plane (degenerate principal axes) representation centred

Yes that would look cool! And perhaps also an outline of the bounding box
That's dependent on the choice of orientation.. but the convex hull (shrink wrap boundary) isn't and would be useful

Ahh I didn't know that, nice!

agreed. I just want a green dot............

Actually, i think there is a green dot! holy cow. click and hold center mouse button... the green dot appears to be the center of mass............

i think this is true.... i just threw this pic together.

Hi benjaminkolligs,

this is coming in the January update.  there will be a CoM tool in the inspect panel and will place a glyph on the body/component that you can see, measure to and toggle on or off in the browser.

One note, the green dot that you're seeing is the focal point of your camera and not a CoM.

hope this helps,

Jamie.

Glad to hear it's coming, Jamie !

Any chance of getting 0-3 principal axes and planes along with that tool ?

Fantastic! Thank you so much Jamie and the Fusion 360 team!

That's awesome about CM @keqingsong !

Any chance of doing the same with higher moments ?

Three non-degenerate eigenvalues: full eigenbasis
Two non-degenerate eigenvalues: one construction plane spanning the degenerate eigenvectors and one axis for the non-degenerate eigenvector

Three degenerate eigenvalues: just the CM

This would be extremely useful for mechatronics and things like tops
